I was able to dial out with my modem when it was set to IRQ 3, but in windows it is 9. So if this is your problem then you need to use "setserial". : :Hope this helps, :Matt : Thanks that did the trick. PPPD still dies though I still have a working connection when it does. I get an error message in /var/log/messages that says something like "timed out getting IPX configuration" then pppd dies. I am not using the IPX protocol to connect to my ISP and I am assuming that there is a "switch" or something along those lines that I can use to tell pppd not to bother with IPX.
