I have tried to compile the new 5.0 alpha (with code colour highlighting) on SuSE without much luck, though I haven't tried very hard.
No no no! Vim5 is not alpha. It's released! Go get it, you will love it.

Josh, Thanks for the tip, I had a look at the site, downloaded vim-5.0.tar.gz and ran ./configure; make etc, but all seemed to go well until I got a mass of warnings(not ERRORS) refering to perl files. The compile appeared to finish but the vim executable was not there, damn and blast. I'll have a closer look tonight. Vim 5 looks great and I MUST have it, so if you have any tips I'd by grateful.
Thanks, Matt
Just in case anyone else has the same problem with vim5.0. I still got the compile errors after a number of attempts. The docs, tools etc all compiled, but not the vim executable. I cheated in the end and got a precompiled binary i.e., :- <A HREF="http://willkuere.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~thomas/vim/bin/vim-5.0_linux_gui-athena.tar.gz"><A HREF="http://willkuere.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~thomas/vim/bin/vim-5.0_linux_gui-athena.tar.gz</A">http://willkuere.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~thomas/vim/bin/vim-5.0_linux_gui-athena.tar.gz I put this in /usr/local/bin , then ran make install??? for all but the bin-target (eg make installman)in the src directory of the partially compiled source distribution. vim 5.0 works perfectly now and it is great. The colour highlighting for heaps of languages is very nice. I am not a full time programmer and I am not sure why the make bailed out with all those perl warnings, and a "ld: no such file or directory" error. I know it would be much better to have it fully compiled on SuSE 5.1. My SuSE installation is pretty standard, I have made no big changes. Any ideas out there.
