Hi SuSE Users: I have just installed 7.1 and I am sorry to say the my Diamond Viper 770D nVIDIA card works just awful. I need to find a replacement card that is definitely Linux compatible. Any suggestions? At least in SuSE 7.0 it gave something akin to 3D but nVIDIA does a lousy job on providing drivers. I have had this thing for a year. It was a "gift" from Dell and the geniuses at Red Hat, who said it was a Linux compatible card. This computer was supposed to be Linux compatible. Disgusted with nVIDIA Corp. Jonathan

That card should be compatable. What problems are you having? Are you using the SuSE provided drivers, or did you download the drivers from Nvidia's Web Site? - V -- Victor R. Cardona vcardona@home.com "Behold the keyboard of Kahless, the greatest Klingon code warrior that ever lived!"

I've got a Viper V770 also and am planning to spend some time tonight trying to get it working. Ben here also has one and it's working great for him, so I know it can be done. I'll try to report back if I get it working. A few threads up, someone posted a URL pointing to the SuSE portal page that had some info on getting nVIDIA stuff working on 7.0 and 7.1. You could also check portal.suse.com and check the "Hardware" section to get the same info. Good luck and don't give up on nVIDIA yet! ;^) Ken -- "We can build a better product than Linux..." -- Microsoft VP Jim Allchin

I used to recommend nVidia for a while. Now I am back to either Matrox (G450) or ATI (Radeon). At least they provide XFree86 drivers in source. Lenz, since you mentioned Radeon's, can you confirm if the XFree in SuSE 7.1 supports 3D on the Radeon "out of the box"? Thanks, Ken -- "We can build a better product than Linux..." -- Microsoft VP Jim Allchin

I'm not Lenz, but I can answer your question. The only distro that "out of the box" supports 3d accel (experimental) with the Radeon is the Mandrake 8.0 beta using the 2.42 kernel and XFree4.0.2 In SuSE 7.1 you get 3d but not with accel. Charles (-: Forever never goes beyond tomorrow.

I honestly don't know, but I will check... LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany To be a Californian means to have faults others don't.

No, Radeon with 3D support will probably come in XFree86 4.1.0. My bad: I was assuming, the 3D support is already in. :( LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer/ 90443 Nuernberg, Germany Pretend to spank me - I'm a pseudo-masochist.
Jonathan, I will send you my X config file..because *I* know this card works really, really well under 7.1 mainly because I play Q3A, Soldier of Fortune..etc..etc. and all the GL screensavers in KDE2 work perfectly. Something else is wrong because this card kicks ass with the nVidia drivers that are in 7.1 If you want the config file let me know and if more then 1 person wants it I will post it to the list. Yes, please post it to the list! I am going to attempt an install on my wife's Compaq w/nVidia TNT2 card. She has opened the door to Linux slightly, so I am rushing in and don't need big probs with graphics. Thanks!! Tom

I have an ELSA Synergy II card, which I believe uses the same chipset i.e. RivaTNT2. which I would like to get working as currently I don't think I'm getting the best out of it. So if you could post the config file that would be a big help. Many thanks, Mark
Well, because I already posted it to the list. I don't want to screw up anyones bandwidth..so you can get the file from here...and anyone else is free to grab it. http://www.whack.org/~ben/stuff It's the only file in that directory.
