Has anyone been able to use the Network Browsing function?
It seems to work here for me. Using KDE 3.2.1 that came with 9.1

Did you enter the information needed in KDE's control center? I have tried this with WindowsXP machines in a workgroup. I do not know about using this with machines that are on a domain. Marshall

I have not tried 9.1, but in 9.0 the default smb:// does not seem to work. smb://machine does fine. I assume this is a konqueror bug. What have you actually tried? Greg Engel

I had no problem in 9.0. What do you mean "what have you tried"? smbclient is installed. You should not need samba running unless you want to connect to a local share (why would you when you are on the local machine). Also please don't just reply to all, try to reply to list and if that is not available edit the To: line so the reply only goes to the list. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)

Clicking on the Windows Network icon does not work for me, konqueror tries to access: smb:/ If I enter: smb://home (I have a home workgroup) then it works fine.

I get the same result. I haven't put much effort into this problem yet, since the removable media mess was my first concern, since it was the biggest useability stopper. I don't really need the smbclient capabilities, because I mainly want to look at stuff on another Linux box so I can use NFS, which works easily. But that Linux box (a Suse 8.1) is also running a Samba server to share to a Wk box. But I hope this problem of yours can be solved, as I would like to be able to do both. Good luck! -- ____________________________________ Christopher R. Carlen Principal Laser/Optical Technologist Sandia National Laboratories CA USA crcarle@sandia.gov
I can get the network browser to see my old Windows machine, but I don't know how to set up the Win machine to access the drives, etc. But I _do_ see the name of the machine. (I never set up a network before--I only have had one machine operating up to now.) I didn't do anything special in Linux, it just works. I have had the same error when using the Network Browsing button on the desktop. I have just been fooling around trying to see what i could discover and this is what i found: When you get the error, close the message box In the Konqueror window select Settings - Load View Profile and then i selected Midnight Commander and (surprise, surprise) it showed my Windows Domain. Now when i click the Network Browsing button all is working perfectly. HTH Tim
Yep, same problem here. Two machines running 9.1. One is an upgrade from 9.0 and one is a clean install. Then both do the same thing, as you discribed. smb://client works just fine, but smb:/ bombs. The 9.0 system worked just fine before the upgrade. To be exact, the following occurs: clicking on Network Browsing brings up Konqueror with "service:/" in the Location: There are then two choices in the window: 1) All SPL Services and 2) Windows Network. Clicking on Windows Network changes the Location: to smb:/ After a 20 second timeout, the error Ken mentions appears in a dialog box. Dan Ken Schneider wrote:
