Hi guys, Just a quick question - the SUSE 10.0 package I got was quite a bit thinner as previous ones, and had no printed manuals. Is this the new way they're doing it everywhere, or just a local packaging? I'm thinking of just ordering 10.1 from overseas, if I can get the package with printed manuals. Thanks Hans

Sadly (my personal view and not held by some others) this is the way Novell intend to deliver SuSE from now on. Again, personal opinion, but I think it is a backward step. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. All 10.0 boxes that I have ssen came with a printed manual. True: the box is smaller than it used to be and it has only one instead of two printed manuals (the other one is available as PDF and HTML). Also true: the box is considerably cheaper than it used to be. If Hans had no manual in his box then I wonder if that was an original version ... Hans: where did you buy it and how much did it cost? Greetings from Stuhr hartmut
All 10.0 boxes that I have ssen came with a printed manual. Ooh, my blunder! There is a book inside, called the "start up" manual or something like that. But that's really no use to me. The Administrator manual that I got with 9.0 is the one I still use every now and then, even on later versions and on SLES (whatever happened to

Doesn't help when you want to read the admin in the bath or on the toilet either :-( I still keep my old Admin guides, 9.3 being the latest version. I still remember the PDP and VAX, you got a bundle of reel-to-reel tapes and 5 pulped major desiduous forests in the packaging :-P Dave

My boxed SCO Xenix SVR4 for the 80286 was probably four times the size of SUSE's 9.3 retail box and IIRC came with about fifteen 5.25" floppies and four or five *books*... leading me to believe there must be a logarithmically inverse ratio between the code and hard copy documentation. If the trend continues, we should soon be up to a half-dozen DVDs and a postcard with "Quick Start" bullets on it ;-) - Carl

I've had my clamshell ibook under stuff...for days. Then again I don't think it has a fan. I don't remember seeing one when I had it open. If you can't do what you have to do, in the time it takes to read the complete set of VAX manuals, you need to drink a *LOT* of prune juice. ;-)

Ah, sorry , I was not counting the start up guide. I'm assuming Hans meant the 'proper' set of manuals that we used to get. Everyone I know who has purchased the boxed set of SuSE 10 has chucked the 'start up' pamphlet in the bin. I personally got a copy off Linux-Magazine this time round. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. Pamphlet? My 'START-UP' book has 276+ pages.

Novell SUSE has several official SUSE guides and courses for sale. Most are quite expensive, especially those with included virtual machines on DVD. If you want the whole set, count on something like a couple of thousand of US$. 2006/2/8, Colin Fraser <colin.fraser@riverfern.co.uk>:

All I wanted was SuSE 10 in the same manner as I had 'purchased' not downloaded 9.1, 9.2 and 9.3 Because they did not include the same printed material I opted for the magazine cover disk version. I sincerely hope Novell do a u-turn and re-introduce the proper printed manuals. This is what I expect with a proper operating system. I do not intend on going down the tired and well worn path of whether one should purchase SuSE or not. That has caused way too many silly arguments. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way.
