Folks, I've been helping a friend convert their Windows machine to SuSE... Has anyone successfully installed the Lexmark Z600 inkjet (USB) under SuSE 9.2 ? Oh, before I forget, it's SuSE installed on a Sony VAIO w/256MB and P4-2.4Ghz. I have spent many hours over the last 3 days with no joy. Basically, I installed CUPS and it did not find the printer, but it did find "on" out there on /dev/usblp0 and would not configure it properly. Seaching the web, I found Thorton's Home Page where he describes installing a Dell A920 (Z600 printer rebranded), but for RedHat 9.0. Next, I dropped over to Lexmark's site and read what I could there under the Linux DDK and grabbed a copy of the PPD they had there for the Z600 series. The version of CUPS installed is 1.1.21-16 (latest as of last week). After following Thorton's directions, I got the PPD installed in /usr/share/cups/model/Lexmark and CUPS found it on the next pass. The printer installs just fine (according to YAST), but will not respond to test pages, etc. Next I fired up CUPS via http://localhost:631 and walked through the manager: A) stopping and restarting the printer. B) resumitting a test page C) Deleting and recreating the printer. Still no luck. I checked the permissions on /dev/usb/lp0 and /dev/usblp0 and both allow "rw". Is there anything else I can try, or something I missed? This is the last piece of the puzzle for him to have a fully functional machine that's better than he last saw it. Thanls in advance, ...Paul

Well, first of all, there is no Z600 on the Lexmark homepage (at least I couldn't find it, so might you have swollowed a letter, f.e. Z605?). Then, I had basically the same problem, but with my Optra S1650, which is a laser printer. I could print something to it successfully even without any print system. But I "knew" that it is a PostScript printer. So I took such a file and "printed" it through the device (/dev/lp0 in my case). You might try to take such a PostScript file and copy it directly to your correspinding device (in your case as you write /dev/usb/lp0). If it is a PostScript printer (which I couldn't check since I didn't find it) it should print fine just that file. If it is another kind of printer you might just execute "echo 'Hi printer, it is me, your master :-D' >/dev/usb/lp0". If it can handle text directly, it should/will show it on paper. If the above happens to be successfull you simply need to install the corresponding driver from Lexmark to get it to work through CUPS or whatever. Let me know about your progress and Good Luck Martin

Thanks for the suggestion Martin. I will try it and let you know. As to the Lexmark, yes, the website does not show the Z600. No number drop here - it actually is stamped on the printer. I asked, and my friend bought it a couple of months ago at Wallmart - so it may be a rebranded Lexmark for them. Radio Shack does the same thing - shows the original manufacturer, but gets a unique model number specific to Radio Shack. Anyway, it appears to be in the same class of printer as the 601,603,604, and 615. The PPD and CUPS both show the printer as "Z600 Series" - guess this is meant to cover the waterfront. :-) ...Paul

The answer is yes, and currently I have a Lexmark Z702 printer installed and running on an AMD64 SuSE 9.2 system. Lexmark, has a driver for the Z600 type ... look for it on their website. Install it, if I remember correctly the old driver they had required a specific version of CUPS, a redhat package. There's also another site, that has created drivers for the Lexmark printers, based on their printer SDK. Google for it, it's in .dk if I remember correctly.

The PPD is not enough for the Lexmark printers. There's a raster filter as well, that needs to be run. You'll find it in the Lexmark cups package. http://users.netwit.net.au/~pursang/lex.html
Örn and Martin, I want to thank you for the help you provided today. Between both your suggestions, I got the printer working with CUPS. http://users.netwit.net.au/~pursang/lex.html provided the final clue to what I was missing to get things working. It seems that the CUPS driver Lexmark provides requires V8.3 of the libtcl and libtk libraries. Invoking the following commands: ln -s /usr/lib/libtcl8.4.so /usr/lib/libtcl8.3.so ln -s /usr/lib/libtk8.4.so /usr/lib/libtk8.3.so And then installing the driver per the web page brought up the printer without any problems - graphics and all (Postscript Level/3). Doing some more investigating at SuSE.com yielded some reports that Lexmark is poorly supported across their InkJet printer line with only a few models (Z11,22,52,53, and severla others) compatible with SuSE. I am going to recommend that my friend look at another company such as HP in order to get better use from his printer. Again, thank you for your suggestions and help. Cheers, ...Paul
