Dominik,
I am not sure what is meant by error log. I looked at the /root/errors and saw nothing there. As far as my system goes:
Asus PCI MB P5 -MMX 200 Matrox Melinium II 4 X 32 MB EDO SIMMs US Robotics 33.6 Sportster Intellimouse with IMPS driver Western Digital 1G IDE HD
I have also had no problems with Asus mainboards. However, I've noticed a *LOT* of problems recently with a) heat, and even more with b) dodgy power supplies. voltage tolerance is 5% (check with a good multimeter), though personally I wouldn't accept anything worse than 20n the 5V and 30n the 12V.

Simon, That is not a bad idea. I have never had problems with lockups while running NT on the same system for over a year. That doesn't mean that I am not experiencing a coincidental power fluctuation problem. I do notice that my monitor sometimes shimmers at 60 Hz. I believe this is due to dirty house current. Will something like an APC UPS clean up the wave form? I'm still a bit suspicious of the mouse driver. My mouse it definitely acting flakey.
