In a nut shell, oh, on SuSE 8.2. KDE 3.1.[123] screen saver disabled and works as advertised. Gnome,Xfce4 and other window managers. TI he screen saver or maybe something else DPMS. blanks the screen in 10mins. Even w/xawtv running and setup to disable screen savers, but still blanks out. DPMS off in XF86Config file. a "set -DPMS' in my .xinitrc file. I just added last night xset s off to .xinitrc after above... because the screen still went black. My dad even delted the xscreensaver exec. Albeit he didn't know what he was doing...
