The Konqueror browser supports "fish", which can be use to browse remote computers. While it works well, I'd like to be able to set up a URL, with a different userid, than my own. I've tried adding userid@ to the front of the URL, as is done with ssh, but it doesn't work. Any ideas about how I could do this? tnx jk

Strange, works fine here. Charles -- There are no threads in a.b.p.erotica, so there's no gain in using a threaded news reader. (Unknown source)

Hi, I'm trying to install SuSE 9.3 on a Dell Dimension 9100. I've tried many thing without any success. The last try I've made was to install the distrib in text mode, and then ask yast to install the package needed to start X. The default boot level is 3 and therefore, I have to log into the system as root and type "init 5"... The system says that runlevel has been reached and it has started the kdm service. Then, as user, I've tried to use the command "startx" but I receive the error "fatal server error : no screens found"... My graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 6800 therefore I've installed the NVidia driver. But the command "switch2nvidia" complain that it cannot find a Sax-generated xorg.conf. If I try to start Sax2, a blurry picture appear on the top third of the screen (my display is a lcd with a resolution of 1600x1200) and I cannot click or do anything... Did you have an idea what I done wrong ? thank you in advance for your help

Can't give much help other than to say you shouldn't do *both* "init 5" and "startx". Oh yeah -- there are two nvidia drivers. One is the default that ships with X. It is named "nv". It doesn't support accelerated 3D graphics. The other is named "nvidia" and needs to be downloaded from the Nvidia site (YaST's "install software" will do this for you). Try the "nv" driver first. There shuold be something like the following in xorg.conf: (note the Driver line). Section "Device" BoardName "Quadro NVS with AGP8X" BusID "1:0:0" Driver "nv" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 Option "Rotate" "off" VendorName "NVidia" EndSection

This will not help until he can configure "X". He has already stated that he cannot run sax2 to configure the graphic card which means he has no xorg.conf file. To the OP, try using a lower res to start with to try and get an initial xorg.conf file (sax2 -l). -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

No, fish:/jerry@10.0.0.1 doesn't work here. ;-) I must have beed too tired and made a typo, when I tried last night. It's OK now. (Or maybe my computer was too tired. <g>)
Hi, a few of times now I've tried to install 9.3 on a clone PC (different hardware/chipsets). The install goes fine, everything is detected and drivers installed. However although the network card detects a link and reports the correct speed and duplex it will not pass any traffic. It doesn't make a difference if I swap out the card for a different make. DHCP or static IP is the same. The OS will detect the new card, note that the MAC address has changed but will not send any traffic. The only thing I've been able to do is install 9.2 instead which works fine. If I then upgrade to 9.3 it breaks again. I've not yet tried patching the 9.3 install to see if it fixes the problem. I don't know where to look to sort this as everything looks like it's working. Even the Switch can see the MAC address of the NIC but can't send any traffic. Firewall is turned off. Anyone else seen this bizarre problem? Regards Matthew

Make sure that not only are you getting a correct IP address for your location but also a correct netmask. Also make sure that the default route is correct (route -n to check). -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Should be clearer, DHCP doesn't work under 9.3. If I set a static IP (all details correct). I can't send any packets out. Can't ping anything. If I install 9.2 everything works fine. If I upgrade to 9.3 (keep settings the same) it breaks the network. This has happened with 3 different motherboards, 2 with Intel Chipsets and 1 with a VIA chipset.

DHCP works just fine here (SuSE 9.3). Perhaps the problem is with the DHCP server.

It is working now. I don't know why it didn't last night.
