I have a Samba 3 as the PDC in a net, now there's a need for adding a windows server to the net, preferably as a BDC. What flavours of Windows will integrate seamlessly with a Samba server? In the way that Install -> join domain -> work as BDC. I tried W2003, didn't find a PDC or domain. Same with Win2k. How is it done? I don't believe you'll get a Windows server to function as a BDC......
that would require that it communicate with the Samba PDC, and that's not
possible.
You can obviously add the Windows server as a domain member, but not BDC.
If you're looking for redundancy, you should look into LDAP replication
with samba.

Not a chance I'm afraid, at least at the moment. Samba 4 is promising some pretty wild stuff but until then, and probably until well after then its a case of Windows P&BDC's or Samba P&BDC's. Regards, Ben

We have a Windows 2000 server that's part of a Samba (3 as of monday, was 2.1 before) domain. It's just a member of the domain, and it runs services other than what the DC does - a MS SQL db, tape backup, some more file space ect.
I tried W2003, didn't find a PDC or domain. Same with Win2k. How is it done? I would assume there's a replication service running on a Windows DC that another Windows DC would look for.
I'm just working my way through John H Terpstra's book "Samba 3 By Example" - really useful. It's available as a pdf on the samba website too. -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za
