I would like to compile my own kernel. SuSE comes with a few already compiled kernels and I would like to use their configuration map for compiling my own kernel. In other words; I don't know what all the options are. SuSE does. I would like to make a couple of modifications to the kernel I currently run and would like a file to "Load Configuration from File" when running "make xconfig". Does anyone know if these files exist or how I might make them? I am currently running SuSE 7.0, Kernel 2.2, precopiled kernel "Kernel with APM-support" Thanks for your help, Dannie -- Dannie M Stanley SpinWeb Net Designs, Inc. http://www.spinweb.net "Three people can take efficient care of a unix system as long as two of them are dead" - Unknown HP-UX mailing list member

If you have the lx_suse (kernel sources) installed, and then you use YAST1 to install a kernel from the CD's, after it is installed it should ask you if you want to overwrite your existing /usr/src/linux/.config file with a new one corresponding to the kernel you just installed. If you don't already have a /usr/src/linux/.config file I believe it will place one there for you, again corresponding to the kernel you just installed. Hope it helps... -- Mark Hounschell dmarkh@cfl.rr.com
Can it be that easy? ;-) Thanks that worked perfectly. Rule! Have a good day, Dannie Mark Hounschell wrote:

The file you are looking for is .config in /usr/src/linux Tazio

You have to be just a little careful here, with the general config file from Suse it should be ok, but be aware that enabling one option often enables/disables others..so a pre-canned config file still needs to be used with a bit of care. it's actually quite interesting and educational to go through the whole config yourself, many of the questions give advice on how to answer them ! Good luck Cliff
Beware too if you have are running SCSI hard disks, you will need to setup initrd, otherwise you will get a Kernel panic as it searches for your hard drives. Matt On Saturday 03 February 2001 12:48 pm, Cliff Sarginson wrote:

Yes I discovered this problem. My system booted, but some of the stuff errored off, notably PCMCIA. I guess I will go through and select my own stuff ;-) Incidentally, according to that original configure file, visor support is suppoesed to be included as a module (under the USB section) however when I do a "modprobe visor" it tells me it can't be found. If you have any thoughts on this subject drop me a note. # modprobe visor modprobe: Can't locate module visor Thanks, Dannie Cliff Sarginson wrote:

When you compiled the kernel did you "make dep clean bzlilo modules modules_install"? -- Mark Hounschell dmarkh@cfl.rr.com

Perhaps I missed something but I am curios why no one has mentioned using make cloneconfig. This seems to me to be a lot better because you get the config for the kernel you actually have so it is easier to start from there rather than have to make settings just to get to your current configuration.
