fnally got the time today to move my linux installation to my new machine..... i put the hd as slave and when i tried to log into it the new system sees my drive as /dev/hdd and not as /dev/hdb the way it was causing a kernell panic... any way around this without reinstallation. Thanks
Boot machine from floppy, edit lilo to reflect new location of the drive and rerun lilo. Sounds like you had the drive as slave on the primary IDE of the old machine and moved it to slave on the secondary IDE of the new machine. You will also have to adjust /etc/fstab. Not sure what else. Regards, Terry landie@concentric.net wrote:

Did you plug it into the primary IDE controller? Try plugging it into the other IDE cable and see what happens, otherwise you should be able to boot off the rescue CD, edit /etc/lilo.conf and rerun LILO. Thanks in advance for osuch speed replies Just a thought, but if I recall correctly, this means that if you boot from the rescue system, it mounts it on /mnt and has a bit of a fit.
In YaST select "Boot Installed System" instead of "Rescue System". That should [hopefully!] sort your problem out. I may have missed this but was there some special reason you did not set this drive up as primary master on your new system? Charles (-: Forever never goes beyond tomorrow.

Hmm, not sure why you're getting this. Could you post to the list: Your lilo.conf Your kernel boot messages concerning the hard drives (run 'dmesg' to get them back after they've scrolled off the top of the screen) This might allow us to help further.
Thanks in advance for osuch speed replies
No problem. This one's a little slower, though, as I'd gone home when you posted the question (I'm in the UK)... -- David Smith Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 (direct) STMicroelectronics Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 1000 Aztec West TINA (ST only): (065) 2380 Almondsbury Home: 01454 616963 BRISTOL Mobile: 07932 642724 BS32 4SQ Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk
