FW: [SLE] Desperate situation-> Quick time videos in Linux?
Oopps, Forgot CC this to the list. You everybody else already answered with the same stuff that I came up with...except for point #3 - Write an email to Apple: I would encourage all of you to drop Apple a line and ask them to give us, the Linux community, a native port of QuickTime. -----Original Message----- From: Alleman, Lowell Sent: Monday, February 03, 2003 5:03 PM To: 'Alex Daniloff' Subject: RE: [SLE] Desperate situation-> Quick time videos in Linux? There are a couple of things that you can do. 1.) WINE: Install WINE (free but no support; I've never tried this) or CrossOver Plugin (Commercial \w support; $24 I think; it works here). CrossOver Plugin (You can download a free trial) http://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover/ Wine (Preview release 7; This one is free) http://www.codeweavers.com/technology/wine/download.php 2.) MPLAYER If you can actually download the .mov file, you could try playing with mplayer. I've had mixed success with this, it really all depends on what codec is used inside the file. Xine may be able to do this too, I don't' know... I think mplayer uses special version of the Windows DLLs in the back end, so it may work??? (does anybody out there know about this). 3.) Write an email to Apple: Send an email to quicktime@apple.com and ask them to support QuickTime on Linux.... (this is obviously a long-term solution). Earlier today, as a matter of fact, I sent out one of these myself. I have not idea whether this will make an impact or not, but I figure It can't hurt. Hope that helps, - Lowell -----Original Message----- From: Alex Daniloff [mailto:alex@daniloff.com] Sent: Monday, February 03, 2003 4:53 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Desperate situation-> Quick time videos in Linux? Hello SuSE folkz, It's the first time I hit the wall with Linux. My wife desperately needs to watch educational videos from a medical web site as a part of her preparation to medical board exam. Unfortunately these med. videos made in QuickTime format and can't be downloaded as files. Mozilla on Linux doesn't have any QuickTime plugins. They're available only for Winblows and Macs. Should I just give up and pay big bucks to to install Windoze on one of my computers or there is another way to deal with this obstacle? Could somebody please advise any other methods to resolve this problem? Many thanks in advance.
