The XCF format contains all the layers, masks, and pathing info among many other things. It's the default file format for a good reason... but it's only helpful if you're really using the full capabilities of Gimp. You can export to just about any other format under the sun using File > Export. The Gimp devs aren't going to change this XFC setting. They made a choice and are sticking with it. There is a "fork" of Gimp with the Save function set back to save as JPG, PNG etc. No guarantees on stability etc.especially since most commits seem to be from 1 to 4 years ago. https://github.com/mskala/noxcf-gimp I wouldn't recommend it... Using File > Export isn't too difficult, but as you say, you do have to remember if you've saved it or not. Which I usually don't :-) What I typically do is scan something, and save using gimp to see the final result. I can, for example, save as jpg choosing the compress ratio watching what detail is lost, and select the appropriate compromise. For this I do not need the complexities of xcf, it is not "the final product". Other times I go for png. Often what I want is djvu, which gimp doesn't create nor read. I have to use png, then convert externally, then delete the png. Only a few times I use xcf, and I find it lacking! For example, I converted a document the other day changing the red, blue and green curves to improve the readability of the hand-script, in false colour. But the xcf doesn't seem to save the curves so that I can change them later, nor the undo history. Thus, XCF is lacking features for me >:-P

This has been hashed to death on the Gimp mailing lists and forums. The short answer is: - Gimp is targeted at high end graphics editing just as its cousin Photoshop. It defaults to XCF because the power users requested it. Too many people accidentally saved in a format that did not maintain layers so the default save was locked to a format that does. This is not my justification... it is the one from the Gimp developers and power users. You can easily go read it on their forums... and this discussion is not new.. it was hashed out and argued about over a year ago... a couple of years ago I think. The decision was made by the people making Gimp and the power users and they are sticking with it. The full functionality to save into other formats remains... it's simply under the File > Export menu instead. It hasn't been removed... just moved. If you don't like it as it is (that it doesn't mark the file as saved when you export), install the Python extension that Gabriel linked. It's a simple solution that doesn't require wailing and gnashing of teeth :-P Or you can use an old version until the end of time and miss out on the newer functionality and features. simply because you have to click File > Export (or File > Save/Export Clean if you use the extension) instead of File > Save... that's your choice, but it's rather silly. Correct your conception of the actual operation before deciding. The script being discussed offers the same functionality as previous versions of gimp, ie: directly saving an image to other than xcf format and not displaying the unsaved image warning. I'm running 2.8.2 and the 'save' vs 'export' navigation is definitely a change that takes some getting used to. I think this is primarily because old habits die hard. Being a very long time GIMP user, for many weeks after upgrading, I had to backtrack and 'export' every single time because I'd habitually ... meaning without thinking about it ... tried to 'save' ... *and* I found it annoying, sometimes infuriating, until I broke the old habit. Now I habitually 'export' to save in a non-native GIMP format and I 'overwrite' to update non-native files that I've opened in GIMP and changed. So I no longer think about it. OTOH, I can recall several instances in the past where I mistakenly 'saved' some work that started out in a non-native GIMP format and then quickly, without thinking about it, closed the file -- only to realize moments later that I'd just thrown away important layers or the entire history of edits. This last scenario is the worst of all (if you don't habitually make 'drafting/working' copies, first.) in what directory did you place the file and what name did you give it?

After following directions, the file appears in the .gimp-2.8/plug-ins directory as save-export-clean-py. Its permissions are -rwxr-xr-x. I deleted the original copy of the file which I had put in the plug-ins directory under a different name, which I knew would be temporary. Now only the save-export-clean-py file is in the directory. python 2.6.6-2pclos2011 is installed in this 32-bit system. as well as python3 3.2.1-1pclos2011. Try shutting down gimp *completely* are restarting. I downloaded the file from one of the original messages as it appeared in my browser, and placed it in Kate with the filename gimp_plug-in_file and I did a diff between that and the save-export-clean.py file that I downloaded iaw the directions, as I said. diff reports that the files are identical. I also restarted the computer from a warm start and rebooted the system and tried the whole thing again. Maybe you are not using the correct directory for the version you are using. It is a local directory on your home, and the name changes with gimp version. If you run gimp as root, the directory will be wrong. If you run as root using "su" instead of "su -", then you will get files owned by root on your user home, which is wrong. What version of Gimp is in your PCLinuxOS install? The directory to place your plug-ins in is specific to your Gimp install version. The instructions I provided were valid only for Gimp 2.8 with openSUSE 12.3. If PCLinuxOS is using some other version of Gimp or names the .gimp<version> directory differently, you will have to adapt the steps accordingly. Why.. why would you run Gimp as root? That's not a good idea.. and totally unnecessary. The reason Gimp came up with 3 panels is because you launched it as root, and it defaulted back to the original default settings (3 panel vs 1 window). Simplified more generic instructions: 1. Exit Gimp 2. Copy the Python plugin to .gimp<version>/plug-ins (or whatever the "dot" directory is in your User home for your version of Gimp) 3. Make the Python script executable 4.
