[opensuse] Dovecot weird error message
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I see now and then on the warning log these two messages: <2.3> 2018-03-09 02:56:00 Telcontar dovecot - - - master: Error: fstat(/var/lib/dovecot/instances.lock) failed: No such file or directory <2.3> 2018-03-09 02:56:00 Telcontar dovecot - - - master: Error: file_dotlock_open(/var/lib/dovecot/instances) failed: No such file or directory Both files do exist: Telcontar:~ # l /var/lib/dovecot/instances.lock /var/lib/dovecot/instances - -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 62 Jan 31 16:30 /var/lib/dovecot/instances - -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 9 02:56 /var/lib/dovecot/instances.lock Telcontar:~ # but one of them was created at the time of the error message. I checked with "aa-logprof" just in case apparmour would be blocking something, but no. Googling was not effective. This is Leap 42.3. - -- Cheers Carlos E. R. Hi,
I see now and then on the warning log these two messages:
Hi Carlos you reported something similar here: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2014-02/msg00167.html
I checked with "aa-logprof" just in case apparmour would be blocking something, but no. Googling was not effective.
grep for the filenames in /var/log/audit/audit.log There is also a bugreport that might be relevant: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-bugs/2013-09/msg02929.html https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=842388 You could try putting the binary in complain mode and see what happens. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (6.6°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Oh! I did, no answer.
I checked with "aa-logprof" just in case apparmour would be blocking something, but no. Googling was not effective.
grep for the filenames in /var/log/audit/audit.log
Nothing.
There is also a bugreport that might be relevant: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-bugs/2013-09/msg02929.html https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=842388
Yes, I found that one yesterday, doesn't seem to apply. They did not find the cause, it simply stopped.
You could try putting the binary in complain mode and see what happens.
If there is nothing in the log :-? I also searched in the AA profiles, and none contains the word "instances". There are 16 binaries controlled by AA. Now, I don't remember how to put them all in complain mode. Maybe later. I got a reply off-list. He says that maybe the permissions: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 62 Jan 31 16:30 /var/lib/dovecot/instances -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Mar 9 02:56 /var/lib/dovecot/instances.lock do not allow (write) access by a non-root daemon. :-? -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. So clearly not apparmor.
I got a reply off-list. He says that maybe the permissions:

do not allow (write) access by a non-root daemon. :-?
Yes, they clearly don't allow that. Doesn't quite match the error message though "No such file or directory" and I think the dovecot master runs as root. FWIW, on my older dovecot installation, I have # l /var/lib/dovecot/ total 80 drwxr-x--- 2 root root 45056 Mar 9 03:05 ./ drwxr-xr-x 30 root root 12288 Mar 9 00:00 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 62 Mar 9 03:05 instances -- Per Jessen, Zürich (11.1°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
