[opensuse] What Happpened to my TrueType core fonts?
I opened OOo-writer to prepare a document. To my surprise, my favorite font (Arial, 12 point) was not in the font selection drop down box. I'm (almost) positive that I installed the Microsoft core fonts during the latest install. A search of the web turned up two web sites, each offering a howto for installing truetype fonts and each providing a link to a file containing MS core fonts. However, following the link resulted in a "file not found" error. Has anyone else run into this problem? Does anyone have a fix or a workaround? Did you install the fetchmsttfonts.sh patch via YaST->"Online Update"? To my surprise this did not really installed the fonts. Thus, I started the script manually as root and this time it worked. Hello: These bug reports claim that installing Microsoft true type fonts from YAST online updater does not work if the cabextarct package is missing. I have cabextract (cabextract-1.2-57) installed but installing the font from the updater still does not work. Running the script from console works. I checked it. So the problem is not the missing cabextract. IG PÁRATLAN AKCIÓ MOST! Same holds true for my system. I had cabextract installed, nonetheless yast online update failed to install the msttffonts. I will file a bug report. =========== Why not just install the "liberation-fonts" instead, rather than worry with those? I thought these were built to replace all the msttffonts, so it would be another reason for users to quit depending on MS stuff? Liberation doesn't do the full set: Microsoft Web Font Liberation Font Andale Mono - Arial Liberation Sans Arial Black - Comic Sans - Courier New - Georgia - Impact - Lucida Console Liberation Mono Times New Roman Liberation Serif Trebuchet - Verdana - Most Linux systems come with a bitmap Courier font that doesn't match Courier New's range of sizes. DejaVu Sans is close to Verdana, but there are still a lot of blanks. -- " A patriot without religion . . . is as great a paradox, as an honest man without the fear of God." My personal reason for choosing the MS fonts is that I do not like anti aliasing on my TFT. I did not try the liberation fonts but the dejavu render very, very poorly without anti alias. If you installed Microsoft true type font by YAST sofware/ update manager they might have not been installed. I also tried to install them by yast software updater selecting msttfonts.sh patch/script but it did not work from YAST. Furthermore there was no any error message saying that the installation was unsucsessfull. Download the script and run it in a console window as root yourself. That made the trick for me.
