Equivalent of Network Neighbourhood ?
Hi, We did a test run on ubuntu live cd few days back in a typical office setup and here are some results. 1. Users wanted to open files from network neighbourhood with application (openoffice). File > Open > Network Neighbourhood > ... Say when a user logs in, he opens openoffice. Most of his files are kept on the network samba share. If he wants to open other openoffice files he wont open them through explorer but from with the application --->File > Open .... There is no way to open files from a network share WITHIN a application in Linux [except for mounting them in a local folder or through Kounquerer(spell?)...] Yes users even copy-paste files from with-in the application !! They have their application ruuning all day (say autocad or excel) and they wont bother to open Explorer unless it needed. There are other issues also. I will post them later.

I use smb4k which mounts shares and it creates a local directory which I can use with OO and other applications. Sean -- ICQ: 679813 FidoNet: 2:263/950 Jabber: tcob1@jabber.org AOL: tcobone Vodafone Messenger: thecivvie

Which version is on the live cd? I just tried with SuSE 9.3 and OO 2.0-pre and had no problem getting to a file on a samba/XP share. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Hmmm, welcome to the Ubuntu SuSE mailing list... :-) Persoanlly I prefer Kubuntu to Ubuntu but then I don't really get on with Gnome.... then again, KDE is better when it runs on SuSE anyway. -- Take care. Kevan Farmer 34 Hill Street Cheslyn Hay Staffordshire WS6 7HR

This is a good list isn't it. If Lintech will try the 9.3 live dvd that would be a better test as to what will work using SuSE. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Excellent idea :-) I certainly don't knock Ubuntu as I have it on a drive....somewhere...it even gets loaded sometimes :-) But it did seem strange posting something about Ubuntu on a SuSE list. It might have been better on: http://ubuntulinux.org/ then subscribing to the Ubuntu forums on there which are excellent. -- Take care. Kevan Farmer 34 Hill Street Cheslyn Hay Staffordshire WS6 7HR
Hi, Sorry, it was not ubuntu specific. We have tried and trying (k)ubuntu,fc,suse, pclinuxos etc..It was more of KDE specific. Since Novell/SuSE seems to aim for being the best possible desktop distro - I posted it here :) We can access network files via file browser (be it nautilus or Konqueror) but not from within a application (unless its explicitly mounted) In windows its "My Network Places" and its visible in all applications. Be it open or save file. Say for example in Linux I want to do the following : I made a openoffice spead sheet and want to save it to a samba/windows share on some other pc. I have to either save it locally and then move it to the other pc or mount the share. I cannot do a File > Save As > Network > "ACMEPC1" > "Sharename" > Filename. I myself have never done this and find it strange - but that is how all of the employes in the company where I am doing internship are working. They are autocad/word/excel/firefox users and frequently need to share data among different departments.

Could you have some kind of script run at boot to mount the network drives that the users will be accessing? and/or put something in fstab? This depends on the app. For example, OpenOffice supports openning files on the network, without first mounting the share.

Still missing your exact problem, but all kde applications are network transparent. So, you can in the file open dialog specify a directory with: - fish:\\login:passwd@server\path - ftp:\\login:passwd@server\path - smb:\\server\... etc, etc. Saving works the same way. If OOo uses kde's file dialog, this should be possible with OOo too. Checkout kinfocenter for all possibilities. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
