I have ahd two crashes lately in KDE. The display locks up and i can't do anything. Nor ctrl-alt-bksp nor ctrl-alt-del do anything, not does trying another console. Any idea what's up with this? Any suggestions for ways to break out of it. -- Bob Rea Freedom is only privilege extended unless enjoyed by one and all --Billy Bragg rear@sirius.com rrea@askjeeves.com http://www.sirius.com/~rea -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Bob, Curious... what app were you running on top of KDE when the crashes occured? In my own experience crashes in KDE 1.0+ are probably due to Xserver config problems. I reported this back when 6.2 was released but havn't upgraded to 6.3 and the newest versions of KDE to try it again. Anyone want to give it a go? You can find my fixes for it in the archives that when done quickly enough, you won't have to reset. I had a few recent crashes as well. Playing the solitair card games (napoleons tomb) in KDE. Something graped all memory and cache. If it's progressing to fast nothing will help. If the system locks up, it's "press reset" time. ;-( I just read about "magic keys", or rather magic_sysreq_key, a kernel option, more described in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sysreq.txt. Didn't have the time to check / test it yet, but it might be worth to look at. The option is found in the "Kernel Hacking" section of the kernel configuration. I found it was originated by my (old) video card: it was a S3 Virge GX/2 4 MB (if I remember); the curious thing was this: with an identical video card I had no problem. The video bios was the same too. Probably the video chip had same strange mistake ... (I hope you will apreciate this _exact_ technical explication). I solved only substituing the card, no configuration nor XServer upgrade. hope this help ... Use cntl-alt-F2 to open a new console. Then you can use the kill command to clear up the problem. Also, I would bet that your Xserver is not configured properly. Try xf86setup or XF86Config if SAX doesn't do it properly. JLK Giovanni Cambria wrote:
