[SuSE Linux] Modem not responding in minicom - newbie question
I'm new to Linux, and I've been struggling with this a few days but run out of ideas on this one. I hate to tire what seems like an old subject, but I'm stuck. I'm trying to test my modem using minicom. However, when I open, I get the "Initializing Modem" dialog, but then I end up with a dead terminal. The cursor is in the middle of the screen but will not respond. The online/offline status in the lower right keeps alternating. Turning ECHO on in minicom allows me to see my commands, but they still are not sent to the modem. My modem is a Newcom 56efxC External connected to COM2, so it not a WINMODEM. My COM ports are set up with all of the normal defaults (COM2 on port 02F8 and irq 3). Here are some of the things I've tried: /dev/modem is linked to /dev/ttyS1 and /dev/cua1 (tried both--also for ttyS0 and cua0) Running setserial gives me everything except an unknown UART. I've tried setting the UART manually to 16550A then dialing. In my CMOS setup, I've set each Serial port for COM1/COM2 instead of auto (this was done prior to using Linux). I've tried /dev/ttyS1 /dev/cua1 and /dev/modem for device settings in minicom as well as a number of various INIT strings based on the modem manual (Hardware flow control is always on). My serial ports are connected right off of the motherboard (DELL Pentium 133). Would this be a PnP issue even with an external modem? If anyone can provide some insight as to what I could do, it would be appreciated. I test a modem by sending it an ATZ, and see if it returns OK.

I doubt it is a pnp problem with an external. Do you have a dual boot with windows, and does it work under windows? Can you try a different cable? Can you use a meter to check the output voltage of the modem power supply? It is also possible when you were switching between /dev/ttyS1, /dev/cua1 etc. that you didn't get a proper resetting of the modem. Another thing is an irq conflict with another isa card. Try removing all other isa cards. Is your serial mouse working OK? Also are you certain that you have the bios settings right? Also, there is a little cable that connects the external com port to the motherboard. Is it on correctly? The little white dot should line up with the number 1, or the red edge of the connector cable. They sometimes get pulled off when you play around with memory or other cables. Do you have any old "setserial" commands in boot.local that may be redefining the port? - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
Thanks for the replies everyone. This is what I've done in response, but without any luck :(

I've tried to send ATZ in minicom and using 'echo atz > /dev/ttyS1' but I get no response. I installed WVDIAL also, but when I run WVDIALCONFIG, it doesn't find the modem on the serial ports.

I doubt it is a pnp problem with an external. Do you have a dual boot with windows, and does it work under windows?
Yes, I dual boot with Win95. It works every time in Windows. If I remove and autodetect in W95 is detects it on COM2 with the standard irqs and I/O address, so It seems to be set up fine there.
Can you try a different cable? Yes--same results
Can you use a meter to check the output voltage of the modem power supply? I don't have easy access to a meter, but if it works fine under Win95, could this still be a problem?
It is also possible when you were switching between /dev/ttyS1, /dev/cua1 etc. that you didn't get a proper resetting of the modem. Another thing is an irq conflict with another isa card. Try removing all other isa cards. Is your serial mouse working OK? The only other isa cards I have are a SCSI card and sound card. Neither are PnP, and are jumpered to irq 10 and 05 respectively. When I run 'cat /proc/interrupts' both irq 3 and 4 for the two serial ports don't show up, so it appears that neither are in use. Removing these isa cards doesn't seem to help either.
Also are you certain that you have the bios settings right? I double checked again. Serial port 1 goes to COM1, and Serial Port 2 -> COM2. I also double checked the modem connection on COM2 (and tried on COM1).
Also, there is a little cable that connects the external com port to the motherboard. Is it on correctly? The little white dot should line up with the number 1, or the red edge of the connector cable. They sometimes get pulled off when you play around with memory or other cables. I opened my machine, and the cables are still connected properly and snug.
Do you have any old "setserial" commands in boot.local that may be redefining the port? Nope. I removed the references to any modem/serial device in the rc.config also.
Are there any other methods to troubleshoot this? Thanks for your patience. As soon as I get this working, everything will be setup, and can start to migrate away from M$. -- Marc <A HREF="http://www.cybercom.net/~mrmoody"><A HREF="http://www.cybercom.net/~mrmoody</A">http://www.cybercom.net/~mrmoody</A</A>> - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
