rpm problem + nvidia riva tnt
Hi all, After a reinstall last week of SuSE 8.0 i am experiencing a strange problem : I am using nVIDIA RIVA TNT graphics card. I installed 2 rpms files in the previous installation which i downloaded from nVIDIA homepage for my distribution. These 2 rpms are drivers for the card. I was using them for 5 months and all where great (except that x were slow starting up). So i tried installing them in this reinstall. When i checked if they were installed correctly i found out that something went wrong: # rpm -q NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960.suse80.i386.rpm package NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960.suse80.i386.rpm is not installed # rpm -q NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960.suse80.i386.rpm package NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960.suse80.i386.rpm is not installed Hmmm ... not installed. So i tried reinstalling by executing the command rpm -Uhv. # rpm -Uhv NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960.suse80.i386.rpm package NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960 is already installed # rpm -Uhv NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960.suse80.i386.rpm package NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960 is already installed Now i got all confused. What's happening here? SAX2 gives me errors when i try to configure x. I am sure that nvidia drivers are not installed correctly. I tried downloading again the driver rpms and do the installation from the beginning. No success. I get the same messages. Also noticed that KDE3 after the reinstall is very slow (has to do with 3d acceleration missing? I dont think so but i would like to mention this) Another thing that annoys me is that i cant use xv as my vo driver using mplayer so i use x11 which is very slow on my machine. When i used the nVIDIA drivers all worked fine with giving the parameter -vo xv with mplayer. Thank you for reading my message.

Looks like you have them already installed -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

you are right Togan. I searched over and i used the following pipe: # rpm -qa | grep -E "^NVIDIA" NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960 NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960 It seems the packages are properly installed. But still i have problems with X configuration with SAX2. The message i get is: XFree86 Startup Protocol File XFree86 Version 4.2.0 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 23 January 2002 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. I've had this error crop up on 4 completely different machines at work including my own workstation. I've spent hours trying to figure out what is causing this. My workstation the office worked fine since 8.0 was released/put on the machine. Then I upgraded via apt a couple XFree pkgs and everything died. I reverted back to the previous version of those X pkgs and it still craps. The 4 machines I've had this issue on are only simular in the fact that they are X86 based..a dell laptop, a dual PII400 machine, a Compaq Deskpro and a Sony Vaio desktop. I've had it with nVidia's drivers. I went out and bought an ATI Radeon 7500 a couple weeks ago for my home work station and Thursday for my office workstation. I've had absolutely no problems with them. They have GLX and DRI enabled with no effort on my part SaX2 did it for me..and they just work. I would give thought to replacing the nVidia card. More trouble then it's worth..and the Radeon 7500 has 4X the ram and speed that then TNT card has..and the cost is about $55 USD. * Andreas Daskalopoulos (daskalious@softhome.net) [020824 13:01]: :: ::XFree86 Startup Protocol File :: ::XFree86 Version 4.2.0 / X Window System ::(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) ::Release Date: 23 January 2002 ::If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is ::newer than the above date, look for a newer version before ::reporting problems. yes i guess its time for me to buy a ATI Radeon card. They are descent cards. Actually that was the advice a friend of mine gave when i mention the problem. He recommended me to buy ATI Radeon 7500 to replace nVIDIA TNT. I 'll just buy one and stop messing my head.
I went out for shopping a new graphics card and found an old GeForce 2 card at a very low price (half the money for a ATI Radeon 7500). Should i get this one?. Its a nVIDIA card ... but do i need nVIDIA drivers or SAX2 does all the job for me? Does anyone using this card?

The best way to send NVidia a message that they have lousy Linux drivers and cards is to not buy them! If they don't feel the Linux community is important enough to support, then why should we support them? Stick with those companies that support Open Source and you will get repaid with good products and good drivers! ATI, Matrox both work very well with Linux, 2d & 3d. The decision rests with the user though and how much they want to go through in getting their hardware to work or not. If it's an nVidia card you'll need the nVidia drivers and GLX for any kind of decent preformance. So changing out one nVidia card for another won't really solve any kind of problems you have been experiencing. * Andreas Daskalopoulos (daskalious@softhome.net) [020826 04:00]: ::I went out for shopping a new graphics card and found an old GeForce 2 ::card at a very low price (half the money for a ATI Radeon ::7500).
