[opensuse] Installing Grub to a floppy disk OpenSuse 11.1
I am trying to create a boot disk with grub. I am able to format the disk and copy the files from /boot/grub to (/dev/fd0) /mnt/floppy/boot/grub with no errors or problems, but when I run grub i get the following error: GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory) [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ] grub> root (fd0) root (fd0) Error 21: Selected disk does not exist grub> I have also tried root (fd1) in case that it is an error in /dev with the same results. Anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks, Keith -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You have to copy *image* by using dd command instead of just copying files. ;-) Try: # cd /boot/grub # dd if=stage1 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 count=1 # dd if=stage2 of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 seek=1 Best, -- _/_/ Satoru Matsumoto - openSUSE Member - Japan _/_/ _/_/ Marketing/Weekly News/openFATE Screening Team _/_/ _/_/ mail: helios_reds_at_gmx.net / irc: HeliosReds _/_/ _/_/ http://blog.geeko.jp/author/heliosreds _/_/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hmmm. Then try below command first and see the result. grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 If the result is "(hd0,0)", execute; grub> root (hd0,0) # Note: "(hd0,0)" should be replaced with the result above. After that, try: grub> configfile /grub/menu.lst Best, -- _/_/ Satoru Matsumoto - openSUSE Member - Japan _/_/ _/_/ Marketing/Weekly News/openFATE Screening Team _/_/ _/_/ mail: helios_reds_at_gmx.net / irc: HeliosReds _/_/ _/_/ http://blog.geeko.jp/author/heliosreds _/_/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Best,
I have been successful with the following: use a formatted dos floppy # grub
root (hd0,3) <----- partition where grub is located setup (fd0) <----- /dev/fd0, floppy drive
quit #
This works every time for me. jozien -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
