Have just found out that my ISP (GTE WorldWind) has decided to block inbound telnet on port 23. Question is, can telnet be set to another port or is it cast in granite and I'm hosed ? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

They can change the port if they want. you would have to tell telnet which port to use for the inbound. They could do like us and block it, but only let certain hosts in. *--------------------------------* | Chris Large clarge@macn.bc.ca | | http://gone for now | *--------------------------------* -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

It can be set to any port as long as the client and server are on the same port it will work fine. If you are just talking about the client then it is easy just do: telnet hostaddress.com 26 Just an example. . .choose whatever port you wish. If you are running the server I would suggest switching to SSH instead. It connects using port 22 by default and it encrypts your traffic. The encrypting part being the more important part there. :-) Just a fun sidenote. . . using telnet you can have fun when you are bored. Many internet protocols use plain text to do their work. You can learn alot about how things work by playing with telnet and connecting to other ports. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Darren R. You could always just set up an alternative port with your standard in.telnetd daemon listening via inetd on any port that is not normally used or allocated. I could not suggest a suitable port.. But it should not be a huge problem.. Then just make sure that whoever is telnetting to your server knows the right port. Cya Matthew Matthew King: Sys Admin, Quakers Hill High School.
