Noob question about file icons on the desktop
I was wondering in windows when you change an icon for a file on the desktop it applies only to that specific file. When I change it in Linux it applies by file type which is a pain. I put a link to a shell script on the desktop and try to give it a unique icon and next thing I know all the shell scripts in the file system have the new icon. Any help is greatly appreciated. I've never seen that happening, but you have to be a little more specific than "in linux". Are you using KDE, Gnome or something else? And how exactly are you changing the icon?

You don't say how you changed the icon for the desktop item in question, but here's what you do to change only the icon for a given item: - Right-click the item's current desktop icon - Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu that results - View the "General" tab - Click on the current icon (which may be blank) immediately to the left of the item name You are now presented with a icon chooser window. You can choose from the plenitude of icons offered there (by double clicking one of them) or select "Other" and the "Browse..." and navigate to a suitable icon file anywhere in your file system.

These instructions assume you're using KDE, which as Anders notes you did not indicate. If you use Gnome (or something else), then the procedure no doubt will differ from that described here. As far as I can recall, it's true of all the KDEs that have been extant for the past few years.
