Hi I have a machine that needs a tape backup as my HP Colorado ide 8gb unit id's itself in 9.2 in /proc/scsi/scsi But something on the box is not allowing the unit to be configured. (I need more space than a cdrw can provide) So can i be ignorant and ask Can anybody suggest a cheap 8gb+ storage medium for doing occasional large backups to either an Ide/or scsi bus. I have done a fair ammount of googling - Im admitting defeat. So any possible solutions/suggestion are very welcome ___________________________________________________________ ALL-NEW Yahoo! I went with DLT. Shop E-Bay for "just the right" DLT drive, I got a Compaq branded DLT-4000 (good for 24+ G of backup), CHEAP and it had very few hours and works GREAT. STAY AWAY from DDT (er, DDS ;-) (aka 'DAT'). Travan (I'm told) isn't any good, and most 8mm is dead. Mammoth? Expensive and not that impressive anymore. Same with AIT. Whatever happened to VXA? LTO is healthy and so is DLT/Super-DLT. Personally, I'd go with DLT. It's similar to but much better technology-wise than DAT/DDS. Super-DLT is VERY nice but quite pricy. -- Carpe diem - Seize the day. Carp in denim - There's a fish in my pants! Jon Nelson <jnelson-suse@jamponi.net>

You might want to check into a dvd writer that does dual layer. 1 DL disk is 8.5gb. Their prices are coming down pretty fast, so it might be an option. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

I am almost sure that with your Googling you came across disk to disk backup. Perhaps getting an external USB2.0 HDD. That way you could keep a current backup on the HDD, and when you get the tape drive working, transfer the data to tape for a longer term backup. Whilst RAID is not a backup solution, it is also another part data safety solution. Install an additional 4 HDD's on a SCSI/SATA RAID array, one being removable, and then copy/backup your current drive to the removable drive and use that as the source that the RAID 5 array(the other 3 HDD's) must be built from. That way if the removable drive ever fails holding your backup, you can get another, pop it into the disk array and safely reconstruct your backup off the RAID array. I have not done this and have a very basic understanding of RAID but I am almost sure something similar to what I suggest can be done.
