BTC/ETH wallet for Opensuse?
Hi, I have a very little bit of BTC and ETH in an online crypto place, that now informed me that it will start to charge me for storing my cryptos. So, I want to transfer it to my own computer. I know there is the original bitcoin wallet, but that cannot handle ETH. So I am looking for a free, if possible open-source, wallet that does not depend on some online company and that can handle both currencies (or, in the worst case, a wallet for ETH only, and handle bitcoin in its original wallet). I don't need any sophisticated market tools. I need to be able to receive and send cryptos, and maybe one day exchange them to real money. Any hints? Thanks, and have a nice evening. I use Trezor (https://trezor.io/) hardware wallet. The desktop application can be downloaded as an AppImage and it works well. I also maintain https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/network:cryptocurrencies/trezord (whoops, it needs fixing), which is needed to connect it with MetaMask in a browser.

This is not on Linux but Android (and ios). If you have an Android phone and use your BTC away from the keyboard, I recommend the Mycelium app. It's simple, can hold BTC, ETH and FIO. It is also open source and completely independent. As you may know, a wallet is not really a coin wallet. It is a wallet that contains the private keys that allow you to interact with the coins on the blockchain. To initially access the blockchain, you use 12 or 24 words of HD (hierarchical deterministic) that you saved in a safe place. Since I first installed Mycelium I have changed my phone 4 times and no problem at all getting my BTC back with my 12 word HD. But keep in mind that the security is a 6-digit pin code. If you lose your phone, you need to start a new wallet (with new HD words) and transfer your money to that wallet to be safe. But that applies to whatever wallet and device you have. PS. I guess you should be able to run Mycelium on Linux if you use Anbox or similar. -- /bengan

I've tested out Bisq before. Another option you can try is https://thorchain.org/swap There are different ways of using this chain and allows for defi, so if you want to swap for certain tokens for use cases there are great options. I've been doing Hivemapper and helium as well, but obviously on Solana. There are several options including Metamask. It just depends on what you want to do and what your use cases are. Crypto and blockchain isn't just about finance as there are many problems it solves. Hivemapper is a great example of this. If it's just about finance and you want to self custody then there are several options. If you don't care, just use an exchange. Binance will likely the best option in my opinion after CZ has agreed to terms with the DOJ in the US from a financially regulated point of view. v/r Doug

I certainly want a self custody wallet. I have now installed exodus, it looks nice... [related off-topic rant about exchanges:] I had bad experiences with etoro. This is where I bought some BTC and ETH years ago (with my good luck, right in the moment of the highest price :-) ). I just left it there, it was free. From January on they will charge high fees, so I wanted to transfer it to an own wallet. Etoro makes it the most complicated and expensive possible to leave its money-collecting-platform: you can't transfer directly to your wallet. You first have to install etoro's own wallet on your phone and transfer it to there. This costs hell a lot. Only then you can transfer it again to another wallet. The worst is that you can only transfer cryptos of a minimum amount and you can only transfer the ones you have bought one trade by one. I bought twice ETH for 250$. I cannot transfer those 2 buyings together. Because for one buying I got less ETH than etoro's transfer minimum this means that those 250$ are lost for me. They stay for ever at etoro without that I can use them. I could withdraw them, but that means exchange them to $ again, i.e. realizing the loss plus paying high costs for the widthdraw. So I would never ever again in my life use such a platform. The business model though is fantastic: you pay money and for this you get a number than you can admire on your screen, and from January on you even have to pay to see this number. Wow.
