It's a good start for him, the other way that some apps do it is hardware#:#, though I have seem only one KMIX, actually use USB Headset as a reference. What he wants to do, is something that still stumps me.

Thanks for the info everyone.. this gives me some stuff I can work with. Generally speaking, most applications make it quite easy to switch sound devices, but in some cases, that ease of use is missing... and I get odd requests from people I help out with Linux (like the one where someone wants to route audio only from Firefox through his headset).
