[opensuse] rsync for incremental/synchronization ... 2-way, three-way?
Can I do a simple 2-way sync? I have PDFs and ebooks on various devices, tablets, phones and desktop. All 3 need to be kept in sync. And perhaps with a master copy backed up to the cloud? Has anyone done this? I've tried googling but while there's a lot of interesting stuff and I do know about 'diff' and kdiff3, but over the network? -- Most of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to get their jobs done - Peter Drucker -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I do that routinely, but because there were windows machines in the mix we settled on unison which Is either based on rsync or a wrapper around it. In my opinion its best to designate one machine as master, and everybody else syncs with that. changes made on any station will sync to all partners. We've been running this way for over 10 years. Some of our programmers were in Australia. We scheduled each remote site to connect and sync using unison on a schedule, based on the need for currency. So when we were jointly working on development work it would sync code libraries and compiled executables every two hours. It kept all or our crap in perfect sync without a permanent connection. The master station in our case is our central linux server in the office, and it in turn contributes (not syncs) with SpiderOak which we pay for something line 100 gig. You can do the same thing with drobox. Just point multiple machines at the same drop box. I know a lot of people who do that, but I don't trust those guys much, but if you have tablets and phones and such either dropbox or SpiderOak in sync mode is probably your best bet. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Or from a single house location with a networked drive attached to a router. Owncloud comes to mind. Everyone syncs to the same "cloud". -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

it's risky. On two situations I ended with zero bytes files on the two systems! (one of them was a new disk currently failing). better use owncloud that to perfectly the job jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, the man pages warns he "--delete" option can be very dangerous and you can't assume that it works the same way if the src and dest are reversed. I reall reading a web page that specifically mentioned this when I was searching for a answer to this problem. -- /"\ \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign X Against HTML Mail / \ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
