I think he's asking about what application to use. This IS a problem in Linux, as there's no GUI app. that I know of.

Whats wrong with yast? I format mine with FAT32, if they're not that already. I use FAT because I often use them with Windows computers. On the other hand, I've got a 160 GB external USB drive, which I've formatted with ext3.

That's the only option, as far as I know. What I had hoped for, and some others as well, was a different app. so one doesn't have to go into Yast.

As root in a terminal window you can use yast for the ncurses version or yast2 for the GUI version, <SPACE> and then hit the <TAB> key for all the various options to run a single instance of say 'yast2 disk &' for the partitioner or 'yast2 lan &' for NIC config. The ampersand backgrounds the process which allows you to run more than one thing from that single terminal window. Cheers, I never repartition it at all. Yes it does show up as /dev/sda on 10.0 & 10.1. Bu t I have MP3 player that is set up similiar but it seems to be okay.

I was going to format it as either a standard FAT or FAT32. The problem is that the USB stick shows up under 10.0 & 10.1. In 10.2, it says the partition table is not recognize. I need to repartition the USB stick and reformat it. Second problem, the stick does not show up in YAST so I can not d anything with it.

I tried it in both 10.1 and 10.2 after reading your original post. No problems with eithe rone and it does show up fine with fat32 using "My Computer" Icon which is really just Konqueror. You may want try: lsusb command after putting the stick in. Also, can you check to see if the USB is working on that computer outside of the sticks? Is the USB bus overloaded with current draining devices on that machine? Bottom line is that your situation can not be reproduced on my 10.2 machines. I think reformatting may be a waste of time. I tried lsusb and the device does not show up. I tried it with 2 other computers, one 10.0 & 10.1. It sows up without any problem. It is the only device plugged into the computer slot. To the drain problem, I can not tell. You might have brought up a situation where the on board USB is a problem. I just tried on another prot and it comes up without a problem. I just tried on another prot and it comes up without a problem. It looks like I have a defective port.

I have two USB ports on the front of my machine and they are defective. I have spent the time yet to replace the cable and see if things improve. This is a 10.2 machine too and not reading the USB stick but I have three others that are reading it that are 10.2. So I think your on to something. Do you have any other USB devices you plug in and try?

I plugged it intoa another port on the machine. It now can read it. I am beginning to suspect that the actual physical port on the machine itself could have a problem as oppose to the motherboard. One thing that I noticed, when I plugged the device into the computer, it would cause a reboot. That probably is an indication of a short or something is happeing on he mother bard. My iRiver 895 player acts as a USB device after firmware upgrade to UMS-based version, but it also requires no partitions in order for the player to see the music/podcasts. Every couple of months I have to reformat it, because the podcasts start to become corrupted. My recipe for reformatting is: - Use "mount" to find which device is being assigned to the player, say /dev/sda.

su # umount /dev/sda # mkfs -V -t vfat -c -I /dev/sda
