Re: [SuSE Linux] PCI sound support yet ?
I have the SB PCI128 also, but i'm waiting a bit before i get the commercial OSS driver (money's tight in college). Can the trial driver be reinstalled after the 30 day limit? Does it support 3d sound? -----Original Message----- From: Gerry Doris <gdoris@shaw.wave.ca> To: suse-linux-e@suse.com <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Date: Sunday, November 22, 1998 10:26 AM Subject: RE: [SuSE Linux] PCI sound support yet ?
I also have a Creative Labs PCI128 sound card in one of my systems. The
way I've found to get it to work is with a commercial package from oss.
There's one on SuSE's disk set...actually there are two. There is an old freeware version that only supports old stuff that is now in the kernel. It stopped working when I upgraded to 2.0.36. There is another trial version
only that
lasts for 30 days that will support PCI128 cards.
However, the trial version likely doesn't work with 2.0.36. I noticed oss released another version that does. You can get it from their website.

I don't know much about the oss driver for the PCI128 card. I tried it and it worked flawlessly. However, I'm not into sound so much that I would pay for the driver. It has now lapsed and I haven't checked what it would take to get it going again. I assume that I would have to uninstall it and re-install from scratch. Gerry On 25-Nov-98 John Assalone wrote:

I am an ABJECT NEWBIE but my desire to get sound, (beyond boinks and beeps), out of my Gateway 2500 SOLO laptop is going to drive me to rebuilding my kernel. I won't be a virgin anymore. So I need some basic assistance. I assume: --There is a free ware driver somewhere on my S.u.S.E. 5.3 CDRoms. --I can put it some how into my old kernel. --I then re-build my kernel, selecting this driver somewhere in the process. What should I look for? What do I need to know? I've downloaded WordPerfect and got it going, so I don't want to have to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Linux becuase I made some horrible error only a guy without a clue would do. Mass quantities of thanx. Yours An Abject Newbie - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Depending on the card you have you may be able to either: 1. compile the kernel so that you will have real sound. For instance, I have one system with a PAS16 card in it. I just compiled the kernel to get it to work properly. 2. load the oss freeware version on the SuSE disk if you have an older card. This will not work if you've upgraded to the 2.0.36 kernel. Remember, this is only for older sound cards that are likely already suported by the kernel. This driver will save the re-compile trouble. 3. if your card isn't supported by 1 or 2 then you will have to wait for the appropriate sound support to appear in a kernel OR you will have to pay oss for their up to date version. You can use it for free for 30 days but it will expire if you don't pay. oss has the only driver that will support my Creative Labs PCI128 card. The oss drivers are really good and support most every card available. They are very simple to install and use. No compiling is necessary. They do cost $$$ though!! Basically, yes it can be reinstalled. You just have to delete the directorys and files associated with OSS. I also would like to remind you that the price really isn't "that" bad, so showing support for a Linux based commercial vendor is better than purchasing from the evil empire. (don't party one weekend, and your set!) ;-) Dana - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
