Re[2]: [opensuse] So tried KDE4
First comment.. stop trying to make KDE4 into KDE3 when you're tinkering with it. That will not work. KDE4 is NOT KDE 3.

And your point is what? Do you start KDE and try to use it like Gnome using all the Gnome ways of doing things? No you don't.... you use Gnome as Gnome was designed to be used.... just like you use KDE4 as KDE 4.... _not_ as KDE3. I disagree. I do KDE installs as many users try to use KDE/Gnome as if it were Windows, they don't know any different. I certainly tried to use KDE 4 and Gnome as KDE 3 when I started using it. That's what humans do. Once we figure out how to work with KDE 4 most people (not all) like it, but KDE 3 users are not yet acquainted with anything other than KDE 3 so that is how they use it. In any case, instead of attacking Iliya let's thank him for mentioning the problems that he found and filing bugs. KDE 4 is still very problematic, but those of us who are used to it don't see that anymore. :-P wasn't meant as an attack. My apologies that it came across that way. I shouldn't fire off emails while I'm at work and distracted. People's KDE4 attempts fall over whenever they try to force it to be KDE3. The same thing happens when a Windows user tries to force any Linux DE to be Windows or OSX... it doesn't work, things break etc. A friend of mine "drinks the Apple koolaid" as I like to tease him by saying... he keeps trying Linux on his reg PC, and it always explodes in a myriad of weird ways that no one else can duplicate.. why? because he keeps trying to make it OSX. Doesn't work... yet... if you use any DE, regardless of which one it is, as it's designed to be used, it generally works quite well... like with KDE4... I learned that lesson early on... stopped fighting it, learned what it was trying to do, and the proverbial light bulb switched on... I think that's about the same time I stopped hating Gnome :-) I stopped trying to make Gnome be KDE. In Spain, mac users are called macbores. They look for real ale, only speak English, are old and use very expensive computers. Oh, and have a beard. Is that the case elsewhere? No, here in the US mac users realize that the Mac OS is a unix implementation that many linux distros /could/ look like if the desktop were properly designed and didn't drag the user through an infinite series of painful updates. And we look for real ale and real tequila and are old and realize that time is money and that therefore spending an extra couple hundred bucks on a mac that works flawlessly and forever is a better investment of time and money. And some of us mac users also screw around with linux on the side, get real work done with it, and understand its limitations but don't feel compelled to drink the open source kool-aid and realize that software developers sometime need to make a buck for all of that hard work. And not all of us have beards. hehe ... too bad the Apple hardware has to be proprietary ...

amen! And for me now Win7 is also more reliable than any of various installations of Suse (going back to 9) have ever been as a personal workstation

Linux supporter, not believer, here ... participate when I can, advocate its use where it makes sense to me, keep a personal linux desktop (that is being used less and less, unfortunately)

no beard -- and don't own a Mac, either -- and resist the proprietary experience. But bought my kid a MAC laptop when he went to college, and it was an EXCELLENT choice and worth every penny.

I know two mac users here (Spain) and they don't fit the description. One is an absolute non-techie, bought an iMac because that way he would not have to care about viruses. He is young, has no beard, I have not seen him drink anything (but he does, I guess, when not on duty), and speaks absolutely no English. The other Mac user I know is the inducer of the first one. He is a bit more of a techie, has both windows 7 and whatever on his machines. Otherwise, the description is very similar to the other chap. Ah, and I saw what those iMac had, and they certainly look nice. Big touchpad with gestures. Lower panel in the display expands three or four times, in a curved shape, so that you can easily see the many icons much bigger, and choose one without mistakes. Cute. He showed off using a photo with the integrated webcam and did things I can't do at all in Linux, like automatically integrating his photo over a background of the Eiffel tower (I was here! - untrue), and other tricks. I was envious, I were. Am. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 11.2 x86_64 "Emerald" GM (Elessar))

¡Enhorabuena they do exist then! There is no way I could afford apple hardware. I suppose they use their apple handbags as servers for 20 client networks. You want odd and a little weird.. try attending a Linux or OpenSource convention/conference :-) I don't think you can peg a Mac user any more than you can a Linux user. The world is full of all kinds of odd and interesting humans. Would be a shame if we were all "normal"... whatever that is. I think my comment about drinking the Apple koolaid was what sparked this OT thread. My thread was meant as a joke. macbores tell you that apple make computers. Until they don't work. The keyboard packs up, the touch screen doesn't work, the ñ doesn't work, none of the tildes work In guarantee a guy has to be shipped in from Madrid to fix it in Alicante.(that's 500Km for US users) Then they give him a whole new computer and take the old one away. Then the next day 's' doesn't work and the mouse doesn't click. Great system. At least W7 has a helpline.
