Hi Ed, Thanks for that it worked EXACTLY like you said leaving me only one question ... why wouldn't it work when I used the machines IP or name (192.168.1.2:631 or giles-lx:631) but DID work using 127.0.0.1 (the former both come up with "Forbidden ... you don't have permission to access the resource on this server). Weird! Anyway thanks for your help! James C. Rocks Equant Archway House Canary Wharf London E14 9SZ

It appears you have not set up the permissions on browsing in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. In this file you will find a number of security items that can be altered to suit your installation. The file is very well commented. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Just a note: CUPS has become the default printing system in 8.1 and the problem you mention is explained in the Linux administration guide, /usr/share/doc/packages/suselinux-adminguide_en/SuSE-Linux-Adminguide-8.1.0.0dx86.pdf. As far as I know localhost and 127.0.0.1 should be equivalent. Check /etc/hosts for the following line 127.0.0.1 localhost and /etc/nsswitch.conf for the item "files" in the line "hosts:" hosts: files dns -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

It wouldn't work because 127.0.0.1 is a system thing. 192.168.1.2 is a hardware thing (network hardware). cups is a software driver to access the hardware, so you have to commicate with the software and let it communicate with the hardware. Glad it's working. On Sat, 2002-12-21 at 08:03, James.Rocks@equant.com wrote:
