There is available a SUSE Linux GNOME service containing rpm packages to download. I would be thankful if someone can point to a document or highlight the installation options we have for new installaions or upgrades of Gnome base desktop and packages on SuSE 9.x/10.x: 1) With YaST? 2) Available installation script? 3) Possibly can y2pmsh be applied? If using manual 'rpm -Uvh' commands, how to update the YaST2 package database? Rgds, Terje J. Hanssen

The YaST2 "package database" *is* the rpm database. YaST is a gui frontend... ;-) Carl

Yet, will the YaST2 software list be automatically updated or completed installing additional or newer packages with rpm commands? Terje J. Hanssen

Of course! I just told you the YaST2 "package database" IS the rpm database. The program "rpm" that you run at the command line is the actual entity that creates and manages your system's rpm database. It uses the database to keep track of installed software and dependencies as you add, upgrade and remove software on your system. It doesn't matter if you're using YaST or command line, the database is the same. All you're doing is changing interfaces to it. In other words, when you launch YaST's 'Install and Remove Software" module (pre 10.0)... now called "Software Management" module... and you're looking at the listing of installed software, you're actually looking into the database, itself. clearer? Yes, it will -- but you should avoid to install packages while the YaST2 packagemanager is running, because this could lead to confusion ;) Regards Christoph

But is YaST2 software manager suited to install or upgrade the complete Gnome desktop, or is an installation script best to manage a required package order? I thought at least running YaST2 from a gnome session may cause problems trying a Gnome version upgrade or? Thanks, Terje

I upgraded both Gnome and KDE using YAST2, so it certainly can cope with it without any hassles... -- "I got to go figure," the tenant said. "We all got to figure. There's some way to stop this.
