[SLE] KDE 2 upgrade fails!!
I went to the proposed dir at SourceForge (ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/kde/stable/2.0/distribution/rpm/SuSE/7.0-i386/kde2/) and upgraded the available KDE2 packages. Also I upgraded the localization rpm (Danish). But now KDE2 won't start! :-( I choose it in KDM, and the initial blank screen is displayed, but then it returns to KDM again. I was just looking at it. It requires the latest Qt2.21 package, did you upgrade qt, or does suse7 come with it? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
I just completed installing KDE2 on my box. I did not remove KDE1. I start KDE2 with 'startx kde2'. It is BEAUTIFUL! And FAST! Konqueror has ended my search for a decent Linux browser. All those radar maps that would barf Netscape and kfm wouldn't run at all do just fine under Konqueror! Here is my step by step install plan. 1) Run Yast without a CD in the CDROM. When the 'SOURCE:" prompt comes up I pressed the return key and was presented with several sources. I chose 'Directory' and selected the directory I had my downloaded rpm's in, /opt3. 2) Having previewed the packages yesterday with Kpackage, I knew which ones had dependencies. I first loaded all rpms that were listed as dependencies in the main rpms. In using YaST1, if you select some rpms into install and then go to another directory or subdirectory you lose those prior selections. This turned out to be a good thing because the only way you can control the sequence of installation is to do them in groups Here is the sequence I discovered. Mark: libmng.rpm liblcms.rpm openssl.rpm Press F10 Mark: qtlib2.rpm (It will show as already being installed. I reinstalled it anyway) Press F10 Mark: qtman2.rpm qtext2.rpm Press F10 Mark: qtdevel2.rpm Press F10 Mark: ksupp2.rpm Press F10 Mark: klibs2.rpm Press F10 Mark: kbase2.rpm Press F10 Mark: kde2dn.rpm and all the other k*.rpms Press F10 When the files are done installing press 'ESC' to the previous screen and select "Main Menu" When the installation scrips (SuSEConfig, etc.) finsh, press 'Exit" That's what worked for me! Couldn't be simpler. I've always used Kpackage to install rpm not on the CDs. Never again. It's YaST1 all the way, now. Good job, SuSE! JLK On Tue, 24 Oct 2000, you wrote:

Thanks Jerry, I followed your step by step plan and I am now running Kde2. This is on Suse6.4 btw. The only thing was i had to go into the control Centre/applications/login manager within kde 1 and add kde 2 as an option. After I did that I could select kde2 as a login. I couldn't get it to work by typing 'startx kde2' as you had done above. Oh well not to worry. Kde2 is definately much nicer than 1. Hi, You need to update all the QT rpms. I had the same problem between beta 5 and RC2 Stu -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
