The following errors, they are for the files that you deleted, right? So there must be an index somewhere telling Firefox to expect those files to exist. No, those files do not affect firefox. That's a single file originally downloaded by firefox, that somehow expanded into many. It is the download directory, not the cache directory. I downloaded the single file "cadenaser_hoyporhoy_20240919_100000_110000.mp3" then used audacity to extract a chunk out of it into another file. I'm guessing the directory "cadenaser_hoyporhoy_20240919_100000_110000_data/" was created by audacity. It is tracker, a search indexer, which has problems. It is not related at all to firefox, except in that it searches inside {home}. It expects to find audio files and finds text, so wrong format. It is not the first time I have problems with tracker and it spamming the logs: cer@Telcontar:~/Download/Firefox_downloads> l -lhtr /var/log/ | tail -rw-r----- 1 root root 6,7M Nov 15 12:48 pruned -rw-r----- 1 root root 68K Nov 15 12:48 mail.info -rw-r----- 1 root root 68K Nov 15 12:48 mail -rw-r----- 1 root root 870K Nov 15 13:01 snapper.log -rw-r----- 1 root root 2,1G Nov 15 13:14 warn -rw-r----- 1 root root 6,7M Nov 15 13:23 pruned.warn -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 54M Nov 15 13:24 xinetd.log -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 48K Nov 15 13:29 Xorg.0.log -rw-r----- 1 root root 2,1G Nov 15 13:30 messages <= -rw-r----- 1 root root 2,1G Nov 15 13:30 allmessages cer@Telcontar:~/Download/Firefox_downloads> Still not rotated, I see, despite the computer being up at 00 hours. Yes, there is, because it wrote thousands of lines to the log saying I can not find this or that file. Many thousands. The log is 2 gigabyte in size.

You can also tell Tracker to ignore a directory by creating an file named . trackerignore inside it. I have rebooted the machine, and so far the things are gone (and I put a ".trackerignore" file in there). I'll keep your idea in mind. Problem would be, each process lives for less than a second, then another is started searching for a different file. ps afx might see the parent, but the processes I saw were in parallel, not hanging one from another. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. Do you like tracker? I tried to make friends with desktop search starting from the dreaded-dog beagle on, but I haven't ever found them useful. There are times when I wish there were something that was light (on resources and index size) and would find exactly what I can't recall where in my normally strong directory struct that tidbit landed. I've found normal utilities much more friendly, find, grep, plocate, etc.. They have done the job for me. It's never an important document that gets lost, it's usually a note I've put in a Readme-something.txt that's a bit too long for basket (generally shorter than a page of text gets organized there). I've tried opensearch and at least a half-dozen others. But not Gnome anything any longer. So if you have a "killer search app" that fits the bill, I'm open to trying another out. But I always found tracker much like beagle and it meets the same fate on all my boxes (as a plus, I never have to worry about it spamming the journal :) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

No, I don't have a killer search app, it is just that tracker comes with XFCE (because it uses gnome things). It doesn't always find what I want, and as it is not often that I use it, I always have to relearn it. I use 'mc' which can do a massive grep on files. Takes an awful time, and searching LO documents is useless. I am testing now recoll, that Masaru uses, but it is KDE oriented, dunno if it will work with XFCE. As I started the indexing with default values from a terminal, I can see what it is indexing. I see it wasting time with /home/cer/LOG_imapsync/, so I open the config to exclude that directory; but it continues indexing the path. Seems to ignore configuration changes done while indexing is running. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.5 x86_64 at Telcontar)

It finished the indexing, and I searched for a text string that I know happens in my LO documents. It found it in many places, except email and LO docs, which is what I want it to do. Now, I don't remember how to do a text search using tracker in nautilus or xfce. No, the search in nautilus searches file names only. I can only do it on the CLI: tracker3 search text But it finds the wrong texts. It highlights the wrong strings. tracker3 search notaría file:///home/cer/Documentation/Administracion/pruebas/formulario-790-006_es_es.pdf …Contrato de *seguros* de cobertura… -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. That pretty much sums up my experience with desktop search. Great idea, but still half-baked 20 years later. When search for something specific, a result set with more than 10 documents is worthless. If I wanted to pick through a long list, I'd just use ls. Hey, maybe this is the first killer-AI app yet to be written. All you need is a data-center full of GPUs to train on your particular files. Or ... maybe that's why it will never be the first killer-AI app... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Nautilus stopped supporting it a long time ago.
Oh. So even gnome people have given up on tracker.

It seems that the only way to search files now is to create and register script as a custom action for Thunar.

It was not started by systemd, but by mouse click. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.5 x86_64 at Telcontar)

plocate.
This is enough for me.
No. I want something that tells me what document contains whatever. Similar to Google, but local, as far as possible. This is the XXI. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.5 x86_64 at Telcontar)
