On a couple of occasions I have seen an icon appear on my KDE desktop called a 'Floppy Desktop Lock'. What is the icon telling me and can it safely be deleted and the icons re-arranged? -- ======================================================================== Hylton Conacher - Linux user # 229959 at http://counter.li.org Currently using SuSE 9.0 Professional with KDE 3.1 ========================================================================

"Lock"? Does it really say that, or is it just that the icon has a small picture of a lock in it?

If it is what I think (the small picture of a lock) then it is telling you that you have a floppy inserted and mounted, and that it's write protected (or at least that you don't have permissions to write to it) You can of course safely delete the icon, since the icon is just a shortcut and doesn't have a hardware significance, but it should be deleted automatically when you no longer have a floppy inserted You can also configure the system to not show hardware icons, in KDE's control centre. I believe it's in Desktop->Behaviour->Device Icons

More likely is the use and not unmounting of my USB stick, although I have only not unmounted it once or twice before disconnecting it.
You can of course safely delete the icon, since the icon is just a shortcut and doesn't have a hardware significance, but it should be deleted automatically when you no longer have a floppy inserted Funny thing is that sometimes the system deletes it on next boot, which is normally the following day.

I believe it's in Desktop->Behaviour->Device Icons Well I looked under Desktop->Behaviour as I didn't see your 'Device Icons'. :( Tnx though. For now the problem has solved itself as the 'floppy lock' icon has disappeared.
Just looking at the offending box I wonder if a floppy just lying in the drive but not actually pushed home or 'clicked in' or mounted might cause the problem? -- ======================================================================== Hylton Conacher - Linux user # 229959 at http://counter.li.org Currently using SuSE 9.0 Professional with KDE 3.1 ========================================================================
