Folks, I have a need to convert a number of municipal ordinance hardcopies into ASCII. Got an HP scanner and it works just fine. Now I need to turn the scanned copy in to text. What, where can I find OCR software for Linux? Bob Stanfield 29 Ledge Lane Pipersville, PA 18947 Voice 610-294-9884 FAX 610-294-8119

OCR Shop by Vividata: http://www.vividata.com/ocrshop.html It's not free, but they offer a 30-day evaluation. -Kastus

It works. I've purchased a copy because it is the only game in town, yet. BUT, it is a Q&D port to linux and the best way I got it to work with my Mustek scanner was to use GIMP to scan a document in, using graycolor with at least 200-300 dpi resolution, saving the scan as a .TIF. Then point OCR Shop at the TIF. It converts to ASCII *only*, but does a pretty decent job of allowing you to step through the unknowns in the TIF, using the eyeballs and brain to chose which ascii character to type into the ascii output. The demo version inserts a message every so often, overwriting parts of the scanned text. I would estimate that perhaps 25% of the output is replaced by the message, making any practical use of the demo impossible, obviously. Also, it is tied in with your video and monitor and installing the license key was a touchy operation. Finally, it installs a service daemon (actually a license tracker) at boot. The company is either very friendly and/or very small, because I most of my requests for help on their email list was answered by the company president. My experience is about year old and a lot could have changed since then. JLK On Wednesday 11 April 2001 20:10, Konstantin (Kastus) Shchuka wrote:
