All the keyboard layouts in my openSUSE 10.2 are gone. No special characters or keys work, and Keyboard Layout in YaST shows no layouts available. How do I get the keyboard layouts back?

Assuming your using a PC, do you have any files or directories under /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/?
ls /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/ gives: azerty dvorak fgGIod include qwerty qwertz
The qwerty directory contains the keymap I need (sv-latin1.map.gz).
Okay. So then what happens when you run (as root)
/etc/init.d/kbd status
and
/etc/init.d/kbd start
??
/etc/init.d/kbd status Keymap /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/sv-latin1.map.gz is loaded.
/etc/init.d/kbd start This gives not output.
The YaST Keyboard Layout app is completely empty of any layouts... Typing of international and special characters won't work, especially those that require the Alt key.
Switch to a console (text-only) screen and see if the keyboard works there.
I logged out (as ctrl+alt+f1 won't work) and logged in to the console, and there the keyboard mapping works! After running "startx" and waiting for KDE to load, the keyboard mapping is gone. -- Its failings notwithstanding, there is much to be said in favor of journalism in that by giving us the opinion of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community. -- Oscar Wilde

Make a new user and login to X as the new user. See if your key mapping has returned. If it is still missing, you quite possibly have bonkered xorg.conf and may need to run from a console as root in runlevel 3: sax2 -r -m 0=nv ps: It would not hurt for you to trim *most* of the previous quoting. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 OpenSUSE Linux http://en.opensuse.org/ Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I did this (sax2 -r -m 0=nv) and the Keyboard Layout module in Sax2 shows nothing under the Type, Layout and Variant drop-down menus. Completely empty of any entries... -- Marjoe and Doshen were meditating in a field when Doshen just went and smacked Marjoe upside the head. "What the hell did you do that for?" asked Marjoe. OK, you did part.... and noted that there are no (??) drop-down menu entries ???? -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 OpenSUSE Linux http://en.opensuse.org/ Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, absolutely no entries in the drop-down menus where you choose Type, Layout and Variant. Also the "Additional Layouts" section is empty. The same happens no matter which user (me, root or a newly created user) is logged in, in KDE/YaST or while running sax2 while "init 3". -- Real software engineers admire PASCAL for its discipline and Spartan purity, but they find it difficult to actually program in. OK, then the next step I would take is boot from the install cd/dvd and go thru the steps to: repair installed system and reinstall your keyboard(layout). -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 OpenSUSE Linux http://en.opensuse.org/ Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
