Hello list, I am running about 4 linux machines and 2 windows machines in my lab at the university. I set up samba and linneighborhood and I can see and access files on the windows machines with no problem. The problem is that my windows machines can't see the linux computers. If I ping the linux machines they are able to find them, but if I try to do "find computer" or "browse local network" in windows then the computer isn't found. I did a bit of research on this and I found a post saying that there is a variable in the /etc/rc.conf file SETDUMMYVAR=yes that should be changed to NO. Seems that the rc.conf has become /etc/sysconfig in Suse, if I open the sysconfig editor and search for that variable I can't find it. Is it called something else now, or am I just not looking in the right place? I was also not clear if I need to add an account for the windows machine names themselves or simply a user. 1.) if the windows machine is called "win2000" then do I actually do adduser win2000? or can I do something like adduser guestuser? 2.) Do the IPs of the windows machines actually have to be in /etc/hosts ? We use DHCP and I can see all the local network from linux. 3.) I put "guest account= (here the guest account name) " in my smb.conf file and set writable=yes browsable=yes there as well . I guess I'll stop there and provide more information if anyone is able to survive this intolerably long email- sorry for the long post and my lack of knowledge! thanks, wayne

Have you defined WINS number? it is usually the IP number of your samba server. --- wayne king <king.812@osu.edu> wrote:

You can only set writeable = yes and browseable = yes by a share. Also browseable = yes is default so you normally don't need it. If you don't want users to need to enter a password to see all shares, you'll have to set security = share (this is a general option). Now to define a share accessable by a guest add this: [sharename here] path = pathname here guest ok = yes write ok = yes (if you want to have the share writeable, write ok = no is default. Also make sure the workgroup is set correctly and that nmb and smb are being loaded at start up. You can enable them in the runlevel editor in Yast2.
