Yast software install not working
Hello, I have a machine running 9.1, which has been running fine. In particular I have been able to download and install new packages using YaST, and I have been able to run YOU. I tried to use YaST yesterday to find out whether I had some package installed and discovered that 'Install and Remove Software' is broken. I can start the Yast control centre and when I click on the I&RS it brings up a new window, tells me to wait whilst it scans the packages and then sits there indefinitely. If I try to close the window, I get a message about the program is not responding (I had to get the silver cross and garlic out at that point :) I found this article: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/08/thallma_91_yastafteryou.html and decided my symptoms 'fuzzy matched' close enough to try it. I downloaded the popt.rpm but when I run the rpm -Uhv popt.rpm command, it too just sits there. Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks, Dave

It sounds like a corrupted rpm database. Try rpm --rebuilddb -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

I rebuilt the database but YaST still hangs in apparently the same way. Thanks, for the idea though, Joe. Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave, You may have a situation I see often. A 'pop-up' dialog box has "popped-UNDER" other windows, waiting for input, but unseen. Look around, see if there is an unsatisfied request for input. Move or minimimize the windows you can see to find out. This hits me several times a day. I know of no way to change or fix this; you just have to remember to look around. I have given feedback to SUSE. PeterB -- -- Proud SUSE user since 5.2 Loving SUSE 9.2 My BLOG == http://vancampen.org/blog --

Under KDE you can configure a myriad of custom behaviors and properties assigned to specific windows and classes of windows. I cannot say I've mastered this facility, but it's pretty fancy and among the features that can be configured are "Keep Above" and "Keep Below". Such features (there are many others) can have their initial settings configured and can be set to "Remember" (what I usually call a "running default"), meaning that if you change the settings of such a feature, then the next time that same window is displayed, it will be assigned the setting of "Remembered" feature to the same value it had when last displayed. Control Center -> Desktop -> Window-Specific Settings The part I have most trouble with is the window-identifying criteria that are used to decide which Window-Specific setting to apply, if any. Another quirk to look out for is the automatic generation of such Window-Specific settings that are created when KDE 3.3 is run for the first time and use of an earlier version of KDE's "Remember <something or other>" command had been made. The names of these KDE 3.3 Window-Specific settings generated for these are tagged with ("KDE3.2"). These automatically generated settings tend to be over-constrained, enabling pre-set values for nearly all the possible features. Keep an eye on these. You may want to simply remove them all and start over using the new, more flexible KDE 3.3 scheme.

Hi Peter, Thanks for this idea. I only had some shells open as far as I could see, but given your suggestion of something weird unseen, and my earlier amusement at 'the program is not responding' message, I decide to adopt the same tactics I would with an MS box. I rebooted. Now it works :) Who knows why! Thanks again, Dave

Keep in mind that not all windows show up in the taskbar. The most reliable way to see an obscured window is to shade other windows that may cover it (by double-clicking the title bar).

I have occassionally experienced a similar symptom in which the Install and Remove window never appears. I don't know the precise details, but I've been able to ascertain that the process is hung in a high-priority (uninterruptable) kernel wait. Because the wait is high-priority, the process cannot be killed. Whatever has gone wrong, it appears to persist until the system is rebooted. Since high-priority waits are supposed to be short term, one might hypothesize a bug in the kernel or a disk or file-system driver.
Thanks again, Dave
