[opensuse] Desktop lock-down in KDE4.3.1
Hi list, - in the old KDE3.n, one was able to lock-down what users could do in/with the desktop. Either by using kiosktool or by hand editing various config files. - Are there any mechanisms in KDE4 that will allow one to do the same kind of thing? -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, the config file kiosk mechanism works the same way in kde4 as it did in kde3. Also, kiosktool is available Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Anders and list, - thank you for the info. - but when in YaST (I'm on KDE4.3.1 after much fighting), I search for Kiosktool, it's there in the form of kiosktool4. I take it, that that's for KDE4. If I select it for installation, I get exactly 228 dependency errors. So I back out again... I take it, there is no kiosktool for KDE4.3.1 as yet? - which is absolutely ok, If only it's in the pipeline :-) -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The package I have is simply called kiosktool, not kiosktool4. http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSU... Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Let's look a bit closer: $ zypper se -s kiosk Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... Hi list and Andreas, - thank you for your answer(s). - I use YaST..., but I understand that the general preferred method is to use the underlying zypper directly? I have earlier been (rightfully) critizised for directly installing RPM's, thereby breaking consistensy, YaST and possibly more. Which is why I generally go through the official YaST way. Anyway, I opened a shell and (as root) fired off the zypper command given above. This is the output: S | Navn | Type | Version | Arkitektur | Softwarekilde --+----------------+-------+----------------------+------------+------------------ | datakiosk | pakke | 0.7-154.121 | i586 | openSUSE-11.1-Oss | kde4-kiosktool | pakke | 4.1.1.svn859930-2.48 | i586 | openSUSE-11.1-Oss | kiosktool | pakke | 1.0-252.14 | i586 | openSUSE-11.1-Oss
From 'man zypper' I gather that the above command will read in from the defined repos and give me a list of 'kiosk's' present there.
From the list above I gather that it'd be the second listed that would be the correct one.
Now, there is a zypper command that will pull the package down and install it? What I don't fully understand is the dependency problems...if YaST tells (warns me) of 228 conflicts, then why doesn't zypper do the same... -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yast uses libzypp, which is not the same thing as zypper. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

From the list above I gather that it'd be the second listed that would be the correct one. No it would not. In a previous post in tis thread, you said you were on KDE 4.3.1. As such, you should have KDE Factory as one of your repos. The correct kiosktool should be pulled from this repo. See Andreas Jaeger's

What I don't fully understand is the dependency problems...if YaST tells (warns me) of 228 conflicts, then why doesn't zypper do the same... This because you are on KDE 4.3.1 and are trying to install a version that does not match your installed KDE. Add the factory repo and you should be fine.
