SuSE 9.1, kernel 2.6.x Asus A7N8X mboard (BIOS 1007; latest) Athlon XP 3200 Barton Corsair Twin-X 512x2 RAM OS boots normally if CPU ext. Freq setting in bios is set to 100 Mhz, but CPU at boot is reported as Athlon XP 1100MHz , and system runs slow (but stable). Changing the setting to 200 MHz, CPU at boot is reported as Athlon XP 3200+ but the OS always hangs before completing bootup, with "kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,5)." Did a lot of net searches for this problem, have seen fixes related to memory (mem=1024k) and grub (root=/dev/hdxx) but nothing relating to the CPU frequency. I don't understand why the kernel would react this way to a faster CPU. If this is a known prob, can someone point me to a FAQ? If not, any ideas on where I should go to resolve it? I've tried booting from SuSE install cd. The boot hangs at different points depending on which boot option I try, but it always hangs. TIA for your assistance. Dale

Sounds to me like your MB isnt fast enough for 200 MHz. Something along the IDE controller line is failing at those speeds. Could be RAM, could be Chipset, could be busspeed anomalities.. Try stepping up from 100 in smaller steps. Run under heavy load for extended time to check stability. - -- /Rikard - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rikard Johnels email : rikjoh@norweb.se Web : http://www.rikjoh.com Mob : +46 (0)735 05 51 01 - ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAyHeOWdS2eEYc7lYRAt+4AJ45dG4htwvNBj93Oc/7zAoLiLPdxQCff1pe szUu6mPpVpZv2apvMzd7U/Y= =d54y -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

leading '/' was a problem, thakns for hint. So, I've changed install sources. But, when I go to Install & Remove software I can not get update option is not avialable. Should I remowed existing kde stuff it is 3.1.x or it is other option to update to 3.2.3? This is SuSE 9.0. Jul

When adding the supplementery sources make sure they are at the top of the source listing. When you then go into install & remove software. Filter by package groups and go to system -> gui -> kde all the updated packages will be in blue. Set these to update and let yast sort out the dependencies and install. Jonothan

I have tried using apt by way of synaptic to upgrade Gnome and KDE but all I get are dependency conflicts and no update. If you have used apt to upgrade KDE please tell me how you did it.

Mine ran it in a cron job. When I got up, KDE was updated. Doesn't get easier than that.

Jerome and Brad Sorry about the delay in replying. (Been busy here with visiting grandchildren) I only use Synaptic for occasional downloads of something new that I might want. Believe it or not it is easier and more informative from the command line. From the command line in a terminal: ( as root) First do an apt-get update. It goes out and searches for what is on the server and compares it to what is on your file system. When that is done it will know what you have and what you need to get. That should avoid the dependency problem by supplying needed dependencies. After that you can do and apt-get -s upgrade and it will show you what is there to upgrade your system, but only simulating it. If you see KDE and all you want is KDE do a apt-get upgrade KDE, or better yet do it with a -d upgrade and it will download only into the archive. That is what I do with my dial-up connection so the download can be stopped and started until all the necessary files are in place. Then just do the normal ( without the -d) upgrade and it will install everything in the archive. Most of the time simple and easy. If there is a problem apt will announce it on the command line and generally give you an option to rectify it. I have been regularly updating my system for a few years now with apt. Simple, plain, and easy. You just let it do it's thing while you go off and do other things. I have never used Yast to update. Apt does it better and gives you more choices. A word of caution. Make sure your sources list reflect the things that you really want. My list is conservative and I avoid the bleeding-edge categories. I also do not use the -prpn files. (patches) Although the download is faster because the file is small, it sometimes screws up apt. I just download the whole new file. No big deal when you use the -d option. Just let it do it's thing. If you would like a copy of my sources list you may e-mail me privately and I will provide it to you. Good luck and I am sure this will work for you. Bob S.

Brad, Not trying to take anything away from APT, but you might want to look at Red Carpet as well from the ximian.com site. One of the best and easiest update tools I've seen. Anders finally got me turn onto it the other nite and I have to admit, it's as nice as he said it was. Give it a look, it has a very nice GUI to work in or you can use totally shell commands, if you desire. Thanks... I finally found it with a google search.... and downloaded the 9.0 and 9.1 versions. 9.0 fails on execution: cannot import gtk Had to install it with nodeps since it wanted python-gtk >= 2.0.0-31.ximian.xx and I have python-gtk-2.0.0-31 without the ximian. So I figured it was an invalid complaint. However, they may be looking for something different which causes the error. Off to try RC on 9.1.

I forget which channel it was in. You may need to do rug service-add http://red-carpet.ximian.com and rug subscribe redcarpet2 Then try the rug install again You can list available channels with rug ch In 9.0 you probably also want to do rug service-add http://open-carpet.org That will get you all the channels available in the apt repository. My vote is on an integration of red carpet into yast, I think it beats the pants of yast's package manager By the way, while we're waiting for open-carpet to update to 9.1, this service http://www.snorp.net/files/packages/snorp-experimental/ if you add it, will get you most of the apt repo for 9.1 Also, don't forget to add your regular user to red carpet, and give it permission to do things, so you don't have to go to root every time you run it. It's in Edit->users

I followed this thread and installed Red-Carpet on my Suse9.0 machine and it looked good so I did an upgrade to KDE3.2.3. Now RedCarpet wont work! When I did the upgrade it also updated the red carpet to 2.2.3-0.ximian and rcd rug files to 2.2.0.0.2004. I went back to the originals but still have the connection problem. Where should I start looking? TIA Richard

Run (as root) "/etc/init.d/rcd start" to start rcd. Make sure it's running with "ps aux|grep rcd", check /var/log/messages for any errors if it isn't.

Those updates are ok, but a word of caution on the 9.1 updates (I guess this applies to people using apt too, not sure though) Since SuSE have numbered the i586 version of glibc higher than the i686 version, you will see the i586 version available as an update. If you want to keep the i686 version with its NPTL and other optimisations, stay with the -97, don't "upgrade" to the -98

Good guess. It's valid for apt too. It's possible with apt to pin the rpm on architecture, but this involves the creation of a local apt component that holds the glibc-i686 rpm. If one does so, the glibc will be donwgraded; uilding Dependency Tree... Give it a look, it has a very nice GUI to work in or you can use totally shell commands, if you desire.
Where does one find it? I can't find any Red Carpet on the Ximian site other than the Enterprise version that costs $200/server/

Here ya go Bruce, this will narrow it down a bit for you. You need to go to the ximian.com site, click on Products, then Red Carpet, not the Enterprise! Anyway, try this to see if it gets you any closer.

You did actually try clicking on the links to get to the download page right? I had no problem following the links, downloading and installing the software. By the way it looks and works great. Ken

You are clicking on the wrong link then. On the first screen, at the bottom, select the OS and version and click download. On the next screen at the end line #1 click the link. (I am using 9.1) You should now see the three files that you need to download and install. Instructions are on the previous screen. Ken

OK, I cut and pasted the address from the Yast online update module 'Location' text field into Konqueror and went to the address, no problem. However using the Yast module gives me the error: 'Cannot cd to i386'. I think the font that Yast uses for the location field is the problem . If I paste the address from the location field into an editor like Kate than i386 is what I see. However, in the location field and the 'Cannot cd to i386' error message i386 looks more like this l386 (or an i without the period). In the browser though the i386 looks like it does in the location field and the error message. So...on the other hand this should not make a difference since the numbers and letters are represented in numerical form (I did press the 'i' key) and this all worked fine three or four days ago. Did a lot of net searches for this problem, have seen fixes related to memory (mem=1024k) and grub (root=/dev/hdxx) but nothing relating to the CPU frequency.

That is pretty interesting, because that describes very neatly what I am seeing in repeated attempts to run this CPU at the highest (and, it seems, should be the default) frequency of 200 MHz. However... Rikard kindly suggested that I increase the frequency in steps to see what would happen. I did so. At 100 MHz, the CPU is reported as Athlon 1100+ and is very slow but everything works, stable. At 133 MHz, it is reported as a 1900+ and again, I get a flawless boot, all devices and applications I have tried work fine, and the machine is noticeably faster. At 166 MHz, the CPU claims to be a 2500+, boots fine, and my apps are much faster still. Going back to 200 MHz, boot fails every time. I also tried stripping the box down to just the boot drive, a CD-ROM drive, and the AGP graphics card, removing all other pci cards and extraneous disk drives. That seemed to make no difference whatsoever. Sid, does it still seem to you that the CPU is probably bad? Did you try running your CPU at various speeds? Yes! This seems like a timing problem. I cant tell you what fails though.. Try booting the memtest and run it at 200 MHz and see what it tells you. It MIGHT catch timing errors. No guarantee though, Have you tried installing XP? If so, what does it think you have installed? What does the bios say if you let it autodetect?

I hoped that removing the SATA circuit and all the pci cards earlier would bring a timing problem out into the open, but as I said before I had no such luck. Of course, there is other mboard based stuff that I did not disable such as two embedded NICs, firewire, and nVidia audio. Could something like that be subject to a timing problem? BTW, I have noticed that the crashes or stalls happen pretty late in the boot process. I got excited when twice in a row the boot hung while executing coldplug. I NOCOLDPLU=1 on the next boot and this time it stalled out while setting up the network, and the following time it got all the way to setting up cups before it died. So I guess it really is random, after all.

I've run the memtest (the one on the OS boot selection screen) before in 200 MHz mode but I really did not know what I was looking at so I have not revisited it. Honestly, I cannot say that I know for sure that I even set the utility up properly before I ran it. I think I just expected something like a big flashing red and yellow popup informing me that my RAM was bad! I should have figured that Linux would be a bit more subtle. I'll read up on it, but can you give me an idea what I should be looking for in the output?
Have you tried installing XP? If so, what does it think you have installed? What does the bios say if you let it autodetect?
Installing XP is the next step I was going to take. I'll have the time to do it this weekend. I figured that if it is a Linux-only problem that would pretty much tell the tale. I just have not had time during the week to do more than putter with the stuff I had already installed. Dale

I don't know that it does autodetect, if you are talking about the CPU ext freq setting. I don't have the box here but I do have the manual, which does not indicate that there is an auto setting. There is an auto option for CPU Multiple. Originally, I installed the new CPU, RAM, and OS before I checked the BIOS and discovered that it was set to 100 MHz. I was not surprised to see the CPU speed reported wrong at first, because I found out after a bit of research that the A7N8X version 1 boards were not compatible with the Athlon XP 3200+ without a BIOS update. I'd been running the box for nearly a week that way, watching my apps crawl along, before I found and installed the correct update. When it still reported the CPU as 1100+ I knew something else was going on. That's when I found that I had not changed the BIOS setting from when it had the old CPU in it. Is it as all possible that I created this problem by installing the OS with the old timing, and now it can't handle the faster setting because some module or other is set to expect the slower hardware? That could explain why I have not found many references to similar problems on the web. The proper way to do this would be to flash the BIOS first, then add all the new toys. Unfortunately, the BIOS version recommended by Asus website was for the version 2 board, and I had to do some hunting for a few days to find the right one. Dale

The normal is for the BIOS to detect the CPU installed and set frequency and voltage accordingly.

I did the BIOS update first and still had the problem, so if your BIOS supports the CPU, it should run unless there is a hardware problem. The USA Asus site has a chart that shows the memory and setup for their motherboards ---- version: ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe ACPI BIOS Rev 1010 (03/16/2004) product: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ I just noticed my motherboard is version 2. description: Computer product: A7N8X-E vendor: ASUSTeK Computer INC. version: REV 2.xx serial: xxxxxxxxxxx capabilities: smbios-2.2 dmi-2.2 configuration: boot=normal

Not possible, I've moved the same HD from very slow boxes to very fast ones. Linux is agnostic in that regard, when moving disks over, the new motherboard required different drivers for audio, ethernet, ohci1394 and ieee1394, so the box booted without those and I built a new kernel to cater for the new hardware, also made changes to /etc/modprobe.conf so it would load the new modules. Er... I'm not very familiar with that, but... are you adjusting the cpu clock (or multiplier), or the bus speed? Frequencies like 100, 133, 166... sound to me like the bus speed. If so, the mainboard is also suspect. Thus I think you would have to adjust your bus ratio or clock multiplier setting; for instance, for a CPU clock of 3200, you'd set it to 32 with a bus clock of 100, or 24 for 133, or 20 for 160: notice the factors are almost exact. 20, 160 sound to me as the nicest setting to try in your case (if every thing else works). -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

The "CPU External Frequency, which is half of the Front Side Bus value. My CPU has a FSB of 400, so I'm thinking this setting should be 200. But it crashes the boot.

I'll try changing the multiplier manually and see what happens. Thanks, Carlos Dale

I had EXACTLY the same problems with this new A7N8X-E and XP2600+, the motherboard and memory were changed and finally we found it was the CPU that was bad, now running an XP2800+ with no problems. What a run around that caused as it seemed anything other than a CPU, post ran and it would boot so far, then fail in different places in init.
My XP2600+ would only run at 133 Mhz on the A7N8X-E. I was able to get Pete's machine with an ASROCK motherboard to run the CPU at 166Mhz reporting it as something like XP1500+. Messed about with voltages, speeds and just about every BIOS setting, but it just wouldn't run as a 2600.
I also tried stripping the box down to just the boot drive, a CD-ROM drive, and the AGP graphics card, removing all other pci cards and extraneous disk drives. That seemed to make no difference whatsoever.
Did all of that, swapped the graphics card from another box, new memory, new motherboard -- the works.
Sid, does it still seem to you that the CPU is probably bad? Did you try running your CPU at various speeds?
Yes, see my comments above.
Rikard, is this what you expected when you suggested that I take this tack?
Although I cannot say that I'm satisfied with things as they are, this certainly is some gratifying progress and I deeply thank the both of you for your insights.

I liked all the stuff that came as standard on the motherboard, that's why I tried everything before considering a swap. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer ===== LINUX ONLY USED HERE =====

Hi .. Having had first hand knowledge of this problem recently on a friends machine , I believe there is an batch of duff XP2600 chips around cus they all seem to have the same problem If your chip is new/recent i would suggest you take it back and change it for either one up or one down the ladder try that you should find it all ok ....
