I haven't been able to get You to function --
it seems to go into some loop where it says:
"initializing",
and y2base goes into an infinte loop using up 99.9% of the cpu.
Any ideas on things to try?

Hi Linda,
Things to try:
in a console, as root: "rpm --rebuilddb" (w/o the quotes)
If the machine is acting up,
I often do (in runlevel 3, SuSEconfig --verbose
(that is a kind of M$ approach, but it often works)
Also, Download the "Patches, Updates, Bugfixes" via ftp from:
http://www.suse.co.uk/uk/private/download/updates/90_i386.html
or other suitable mirror:
especially all YaST packages, including:
yast2-packagemanager 2.8.35 (i586) and any others
you think could help your problem.
after checking for "intergrity" using "rpm -v --checksig
install them via: rpm -Uvh *.rpm
Or try fou4s:
I have had good luck with fou4s when YOU didn't want to work.
I uses fou4s in the interactive mode.
http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/quickstart.shtmlfou4s
After installing the fou4s rpm:
*********** Quick Start *********
===========================================
RPM version: (as root)
rpm -Uvh fou4s-0.x.y-z.noarch.rpm # used to install fou4s
fou4s --server -w # select ftp server
(not necessary, default: ftp.gwdg.de)
fou4s -u --checkfou4s # get update description files for suse and fou4s
fou4s -e # check for updates, but no download/install (evaluation)
fou4s -i # download and install all available updates }
fou4s -i --interactive # download and install
... all available updates in interactive mode
The reason I use interactive mode is so I can
do the small patches first,
in the case of kernel updates I like to get
the whole rpm, and not a patch rpm. YMMV.
Hope this helps,
If any of this isn't clear,
just post back to the list.

fou4s is a replacement for SuSE's Yast OnlineUpdate (YOU).
It uses the same update description files
and is therefore a complete, lightweight alternative.
(However it stores them in /var/cache/fou4s/...)
