I don't think I've had it working before. I am a relative newbie to linux having played with various distros since SuSE 6.1. However, 3 months ago I quit M$ Windows for good and committed to SuSE 8.0. I am basically happy with the installation for everyday use but in order to persuade the family that linux is a suitable gaming environment I do need to enable hardware 3D acceleration. As it stands now I have been through various checklists for installation to no avail and am left with 2 options 1. Compile from source 2. Give up and try another vendor. Economics and my personal fondness for fettling dictate that I try to compile the source drivers. Again I've hit another wall in that although I have installed the source packages: `make install` within the NVIDIA_kernel directory fails with missing headers (auto.h) and `make cloneconfig` fails with a message indicating there is no definition of cloneconfig within Makefile Can anyone explain how to enable `make cloneconfig` and/or compile the source NVidia drivers? what is this "gears" program that I've seen mentioned for testing 3D performance? You don't have the kernel sources installed and built correctly.

make cloneconfig is only a SuSE kernel thing to be done from the SuSE kernel source tree not from the NVIDIA stuff.
Can anyone explain how to enable `make cloneconfig` and/or compile the source NVidia drivers?

It's just a little 3d benchmark pgm that displays a set of grears turning and tells you at what FPS rate it is being displayed. Regards Mark

I see a lot of messages on issues using nVidia drivers. Prior to 8.0 I had problems getting it configured myself. Since Suse's 8.0 fresh install, then a online update with Yast to fetch the drivers I've had no problems. I am not a gamer so I can't tell you if there are problems or config issues with this card in games. You can use glxgears to see what kind of preformance your getting or you if you just want to know if 3D and Direct Rendering are enabled you can use glxinfo to find this out.
Again, don't drop SuSE. For just about equal money you can drop nVidia and grab an ATI Radeon 7500 card. And Yes..I've run Quake3, UT and many other 3D games with this. I've also used Astronomy software that requires GLX enabled...and it works perfectly with the Radeon 7500. :)
