Smart update, Mplayer to be removed?
Up to now I have been quit content with Smart for my updates of SuSE 10.1. Up to now I have practically always followed the proposed list of updates but this time I am a little bit confused. With the today update it is proposed to remove MPlayer, kmplayer, mplayerplug-in, mythvideo and vlc. I had the idea that I regularly use MPlayer, perhaps kmplayer, no use at the moment for mythvideo and no idea what vlc is. In the list of updates I do not see anything which could replace MPlayer functions. Why should I get rid of MPlayer and where could I read more about the background of such propositions? For the moment I have stopped the "update" until I see clearer. -- Powered by SuSE 10.1 Kernel 2.6.16.21-0.25-default KDE 3.5.4 Kmail 1.9.4 9:01pm up 0:07, 2 users, load average: 0.87, 1.50, 0.89

Same problem here, but I think it is a temporary dependency problem. Let's hope so...

I have the same problem. It looks like Smart is trying to upgrade libraries, and then suggests to remove application depended on the previous version of the libraries. I accidentally removed K3B, by not looking at the suggestions before continuing. I have now disabled channels causing problems, but I have no idea how to resolve the issue. Marius

For the moment I have just locked Mplayer which automaticaly leaves the other packages intact. The K3B was indeed one of the other propositions some time ago which I did not take.

What I suggest you do is to fire up the smart Manager and then go and Find some of the files you mention above and see what is actually being proposed. Mplayer, for example, is not installed on my system (and while it is used in Firefox as a plugin it is not there even as a plugin). But it is there to be installed if I want Mplayer. Re kmplayer, what is showing here is that there is a RC1 of a new version available but as this conflicts with mplayer it (mplayer) has to be removed and replaced by another version - which is why mplayer is marked for removal I guess . When you Find an application, use the Relations tab to see how it relates to other apps. Cheers. -- "If the terrier and the bariffs are torn down, this economy will grow." George W. Bush January 2000

I see it too, and I don't use smart... looks like it is the libs/codec that is being updated and mplayer expects to see the old ones.
