Request for assistance with PureFTP
This is to request configuration assistance with the PureFTPd which was packaged on the version 9.1 Pro CDs. I have a small home network and woukld like to FTP files directly into the 'root' or 'home' directory of the Apache server to allow me testing of php/sql web pages. After installation of the pureftpd rpm I was able to (ftp) log into the linux machine but was unable to change directory even though I disabled chroot in the configuration file. I have perused the documentation and understood that it is quite a flexible program. This begs the question as to the compilation of the 'out of the box' program. There are many switches, but which ones are set. I was unable to determine this. In any case, I just want to be able to move files from one machine to another and particularly into the web server directories. I would appreciate your kind asssistance. Heri Riesbeck

Seems to work well for me, exactly how did you disable chroot? I commented out the "ChrootEveryone" line by putting a # at the start of the line, and set AnonymousOnly to no, and restarted pure-ftpd, and after that I could cd to any directory on the machine

Are you ever lucky Anders. I have done the same thing as you outlined in your reply and still could only log in as an anonymous user but not upload files. In my first correspondence I mentioned that I run version OS 9.1. Are you running the same version as there may be differences.? I also found out how my version of pureftp was compiled. It showed " TLS " after I had connected. As per the documentation this is some kind of security layer where login and passwords are not sent as clear text. In any case it is getting more confusing and setting up a simple server seems as though it is 'black science" ( for the lack of a better description). By the way, you were the only reply I have received - thank you. Yes, SuSE 9.1 with the pure-ftpd that comes from the discs. Could you post your /etc/pure-ftpd/pure-ftpd.conf ? Then perhaps someone could see where the mistake is I get the TLS line too, so that can't be the problem

You could always compile pureftpd yourself. That's what I do and it works great every time! I love that little ftp server. =) -- Warm regards, Jordan Michaels Vivio Technologies http://www.viviotech.net/ jordan@viviotech.net
