I can't get any sound in gaim, the Gnu instant message program, even though I do get sound from just about every other application and from KDE itself. Is anyone out there using gaim? Do you get sound from it? If so, was there any trick in getting it to work? Paul Abrahams
I also have this same problem only worse... the sound works for some time (about 15 minutes) and then it just stops working unless I reboot the computer. Also if I use gaim and try to log out after that, everything seems to freeze and I can't do anything (not even move the cursor of the mouse on the screen) except cold boot the computer Any ideas? Thanks, Mike On Tuesday 20 January 2004 8:37 pm, Paul W. Abrahams wrote:

I don't know if this is related, but I notice that after using Mozilla (1.4) for a while, all sound stops. It took a while before I discovered that Mozilla was the problem, but when sound stops if I exit Mozilla, not only does sound work again, but all of the sounds which should have occurred previously happen. This makes for some interesting 'songs' if I have been Gaim for a while and many sounds have been saved up. Bernie Gardner

My guess is that you have some kind of runaway process, but beyond that I can't suggest anything. A couple of questions, though. When the sound stops, do the messaging functions of gaim degrade in any way? And when you log out, does it matter if gaim has been terminated or not? Interesting -- my gaim runs fine except for the sound (I can't even get it in the Preferences section). And yours does produce sound for a while at least, but only with terrible side effects when you log out. Paul Abrahams

Nope the messages and everything else works fine, except the sound of course When I log out no I 'think' it doesn't matter if I terminate it or not I always get the same result (and as you can see I haven't played much with it since the prospective of having to cold boot my computer scares me off)

If it is of any importance I installed my gaim from an rpm. Why? Because when I tried to compile it from source it just kept asking and asking for libraries... I think I installed about 7 of them before I gave up and just found an rpm. Hmmm... now I wonder do you have to have gnome installed to be able to run gaim??? Because I installed it on a SuSe 9.0 box without gnome (default installation configuration) and the amount of libraries I had to install was just frustrating.

Are all of the other programs KDE apps? It looks like aRtd is blocking the sound device. Is aRtsd set to autosuspend in Kcontrol? Try disabling aRtsd and seee if you get sound from gaim.. The problem turned out to be in the sound settings, reached from Tools / Preferences / Sounds. The sound method had to be set to ESD. Paul Abrahams
