[opensuse] Upgrade from 11.4?!?
Hi all, I am sick and tired of installing a fresh system every 18 months sop I was thinking of doing a "zypper dup" after switching the repos from 11.4 to 12.2. But I understand there are some changes (like Grub) that are quite significant. What is your advice. Could a "dup" work out right? Does this include switching to Grub 2? There two methods: Online upgrade method Offline upgrade method[/URL
But I understand there are some changes (like Grub) that are quite significant.
In a system upgrade your grub is maintained. IIRC you have to do the change later if you so wish. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Did you consider going Evergreen instead? On that I'm still sitting on the fence.

The default bootloader changed to Grub2 for new installations. For new installations, Grub Legacy remains an option. An upgrade isn't supposed to change you to Grub2. If concerned, do 'zypper al grub2' first, and zypper won't attempt to install Grub2. If you have a system booting fine using Grub Legacy, odds are a switch to Grub2 will have zero net benefit *at best*. The usual recommendation is not to do an upgrade that skips over a release. Better to upgrade 12.1 first. The extra installation time may be less than time spent repairing things or restoring backups after an unsupported skipover upgrade, and likely less frustrating. You might want to consider another upgrade skip: 'zypper al systemd-init'. This *should* keep you on your existing init system instead of switching to the new default systemd, which still has some maturing to do even in Factory for 12.3/13.1. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Just for the record: I just performed an update from 11.4 -> 12.2 All seems well, with two small notes: You wrote "An upgrade isn't supposed to change you to Grub2" Not true. Just found out that i ended up with grub2 Not such a big deal, but at the grub-legacy i had to force the VGA-mode. I presume you can do a "vga=0x314" here also. Upgrade (zypper dup) took quite some time, but no issues Hans -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Very strange, i have done 6-7 updates from 11.4 to 12.2, and no one have grub2 as default boot loader after the update.... Claudio. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Maybe what he has is an entry in the grub 1 menu that is named "grub 2", which is different. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Last week i installed another laptop and server from scratch from DVD. There i knew before, that i would get grub2 (which i needed anyway). So i think i would recognise grub2 ;-) Unless the current layout and appearence of grub-legacy is identical to grub2, grub got upgraded to grub2.... I don't mind (i think), but ended up with: grub2-2.00-1.15.1.x86_64 grub2-branding-openSUSE-12.2-11.12.1.noarch Only reason for mentioning it, is that i saw on the list that grub1 is supposed to be kept. hans -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

As does everyone who installs 12.2, whether they leave is as default or not, unless they lock out grub2 prior to the upgrade. Having it installed does not equate to having it usurp Grub Legacy as acting bootloader.
Not such a big deal, but at the grub-legacy i had to force the VGA-mode. I presume you can do a "vga=0x314" here also.
What's your output from 'cat /proc/cmdline?

I've upgraded a couple of systems from 11.4 to 12.2 with "zypper dup" - no problems, but I don't use grub. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (4.9°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

from 11.4 to 12.2 using zypper dup worked just fine for me - while there are provisions for grub2 , the zypper dup installs grub legacy .......... best regards Ellan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
