In DVD Rip, I have been trying to transcode a movie I ripped using DVD Rip, but it continually stops at 99.07%. It basically just stops there forever until I hit Cancel. I have tried move than one video codec, to no avail. Recommendations? Thanks in advance! -- Cheers, wmeler

Ditto. (Suse 10.0) I'm looking at Dumbo which has been stuck on 99.21% most of the day while I was out. I did this yesterday and the same thing happened then. When I first ripped the movie I noticed it took dvd rip a looong time to get the list of DVD chapters and it took dvd rip (or was it vobcopy?) an inordinately long time to start ripping. As far as I can tell looking at the VOB files all the movie was ripped start to finish. IF I kill dvd rip and all the leftover processes hanging around, the AVI (xvid4) file is viewable/playable in its entirety down to the closing credits -- except that you can't skip around or fast forward through the movie. This suggests to me that the indexing is what is getting hosed. I guess this may be a by-product of some convoluted copy protection scheme. Several other Disney movies I own have similar copy problems or worse. KDE System Guard tells me several child processes from dvd:rip are still hanging out doing nothing useful. I've been transcoding Bambi, Dumbo, and the animated shorts included on the DVDs in different ways and this is turning into one of those Your Mileage May Vary or Phase of the Moon problems. (All of these videos have issues transcoding.) It appears this is based on problems the encoders have understanding the vob abuse done in the name of copy protection. How this is done and how to solve it depends on the video. Somewhere between picking different container types, encoding types, turning on or off PSU core, or choosing a range of frames to drop either the first few or last few frames I was able to get every problem video to transcode, though sometimes the only success was in a format/container I don't want. (Oddly, Xine/mplayer/Kaffeine will play the original, ripped, raw VOB just fine. I don't care about menus and extra DVD crap. I just want a single, smaller version of the VOB file(s) to play. So, I don't know why this should be so difficult to achieve.) The MPEG container option gives me several video CD types of formats to pick from. (Why doesn't it just let me put mpeg in an mpeg file?) It seems to be geared for making content intended to burn on media (discs) as multiple files are created to represent the video. I hadn't experienced the transcoding hang with any file using this option, but the results look horrible, and I just want a single, playable file, not disc(s). The AVI container option and an xvid encoding is usually what I use, since it is compatible with Kino2 on my Zaurus. Usually this works. When it doesn't work it is usually because it hangs at the start or end of the first or second pass. When it hangs, using the range option to skip the first few or last few frames usually DOESN'T fix it. The problems seem to be related to confused indexing information for the encoding format. I tried the OGG container (with xvid) and it seems to only require one pass. Also, whenever I found it hanging at the end of the transcoding if I switched it to use a range, eliminating the last few frames, then it finished. This is the Phase of The Moon part: IF transcoding hung at the start then using a range to skip the first frames wouldn't always fix the problem immediately, but if I cancelled the transcoding and restarted it, then it might work (maybe 25% of the time), so eventually, I could get this to work. I figured out how to salvage the results of dvd::rip OGG transcoding when it hangs at the end of the process. In the project/avi/track directory (e.g. hoodwinked/avi/023 ) there will be two files: file-track.ogm (e.g. hoodwinked-023.ogm) which is the video file and file-track-00.ogm (e.g. hoodwinked-023-00.ogm) which is the audio file Just cancel the transcode process in dvd::rip, open a shell and go to the location of these two files. Enter the command: ogmmerge -o mergedfile videofile audiofile like ogmmerge -o HoodwinkedMovie.ogm hoodwinked-023.ogm hoodwinked-023-00.ogm The resulting movie file should play just fine.
