How Open Source (as per GPL) is SuSE
I mean, can I copy my original 7 CD and give them to a friend... And more important, can I install a single copy in several workstations at work and use it to make money... In my country, where pirate M$ copies are widespread, the goverment has been raiding bussineses (I guess M$ has been putting a lot of pressure there) looking for them... I need legal assurance that installing one copy of suse on several machines is OK... although it sounds unfair for SuSE, I have to admit. Should I switch to Debian then?. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Send Flowers for Valentine's Day http://shopping.yahoo.com

No, in most countries the production of money is reserved for the official bank of the land.

If you wanted a serious answer you really shouldn't ask on a list populated by simple users like me :) SuSE has official addresses too That said, my understanding of the license is that you can copy and give to a friend, so long as you don't get paid for it. And you can install one copy on several machines, but you only get installation support for one of them. But that's just my understanding. I am very much not a lawyer

My understanding of the GPL license is that you can be paid for the copies you give, if someone wants to buy from you what he/she can get for free. Viceversa you cannot be paid for the SuSE license, that is intended only to get your 90 day help from SuSE. In synthesis you can install this distribution where you like and ask for to be paid for that. However I think we (users) should pay people at SuSE for their good job. Fabio De Francesco
Hi Guys, Whant you CAN NOT do is SELL copies of the SuSE disks for a profit on EBAY as some creeps do all too much. The SuSE disks contain 'samples' of commercial (non-GPL) s/w like VMWare and Netscape, OPERA etc. SuSE's own s/w like YAST and YAST2 are NOT GPL licensed and SuSE prohibits resale for profit. My original posting was heavily cropped and lost it's intended meaning... I said that in my country there have been recent raids by the goverment looking for pirated MS Windows copies... so people is starting to switch to linux.... and I wanted to know if I am safe with SuSE.... I am breaking any law by installing a single copy in several machines... can I go to jail.... Somebody suggested asking suse directly... that is the righ thing to do... so I'll let you know. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Again. I'll say this. You can copy it until your burner dies and you can install on as many machines as you like until you get sick of the YaST2 install routine. :) What you can not do is make copies of the software and sell them...giving away is fine..selling is bad. :) So YES. You are safe with doing what you asked in your original email...and no your Government and the BSA will not come banging on your door for this act. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. Ok, maybe we're beyond the scope of the original question. Anyway what is important to understand is that everyone can copy GPL'd software and even HE CAN RESELL IT FOR MONEY. Fabio On Monday 24 February 2003 15:34, Bruce Marshall wrote:

The whole point of what I said was that he can not..I repeat can not make copies of SuSE and sell them for cash. The CD's contain copies of commericial software he is not licensed to distribute. Also, the license for YaST prevents this as well. He can copy it and give it away or at the very least have the person he's copying it for pay him the $3.00 for the CD's used to burn it to. If he want's to burn copies of something and sell it for retail prices then he's SOL when it comes to SuSE unless he wants to become a licensed reseller. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe..
