The user is NOT in the /etc/ftpusers database.

The user has a valid login, password and shell on the thinkpad.

I can telnet to the thinkpad no problem.

There is tree type of ftp access policies: real, guest and anonymous. If you want to login to ftpd with real account (different from ftp or anonymous) you have to enable real or guest access policies. To do this edit /etc/ftpaccess.
